View original topic: Replace BROCAR 34PICT3 with an 009 Distributor?
Miss Bea and Me Sat Dec 05, 2009 2:51 pm

My 74 Super Conv. 1600DP is running better than it has since I got it, but could still use a bit of refinement. Using great advice and links to other topics from this site, I have gotten the dwell, timing, carb, and choke all adjusted pretty well. After studying the sticky on 34PICT3 carbs for a while, I am starting to wonder if I would be best served to swap out the carb, distributor, or both.

I am mostly interested in keeping it a stock setup, but am not going for a show car here. It is a daily driver, but I want it to run smooth and would like to improve on the 16 mpg I saw on the last tank. The fuel economy may not all be attributable to the tuning - I have fixed several gas leaks but may still be losing from somewhere when the tank is full. I am also studying the sticky on recharging the activated charcoal canisters, but am missing some of the pieces for that system, such as the canister.

So let the advice flow. Should I go on a quest to get a German carb with the correct flange number (427-1, I think)? Would it be better to start by replacing the manual advance distributor? Should I have SVDA or DVDA? 043905205 is the distributor number I found on the helpful chart from Keifernet on the sticky. I searched on that at cip1 and got a SVDA from Mexico - is that a good idea?

Also, the air cleaner I think is missing the pre-heat hose. There is a hole in the tin next to where the fresh fan air hose goes through the tin and on past the muffler and into the heater box. I have the flexible hosing, but don't know what to hook it to. Does it just end on the other side of the tin and take heat off the muffler, or is there some tin missing that should be under there?

Also contributing to poor engine performance might be the missing thermostat and doghouse louvers. I would like to get them replaced and found a used thermostat, but don't have any idea what I need to get the louver assembly and control arm. Anyone got any good pics of an intact doghouse fan shroud?

Thanks

Michael

IMHO, there is a smoothness that is unlike any other when you run a good vacuum advance distributor. There is tons of info about vacuum vs. mechanical, but every engine I have from 1200 to 2276 has a vacuum advance distributor on it.

Dude...you got a lot of work to do.

Get every part you are missing, and get it back to stock. Change the distributor for now to and SVDA, and retune. Then retune to Bocar, or rebuild it if necessary. Failing that, get a guaranteed rebuilt Solex from Keifernet.

Missing those flaps and thermostat will substantially reduce the life of your engine. Get them in there. Unless you are driving your Beetle like you stole it, it's hard to get 16mpg with that engine and that carb without a LOT being badly out of whack.

Just a straight vacuum advance or a vacuum/mechanical like an SVDA?

SVDA on the 2276 and stock vacuum on the 1200.

Found this on aircooled.net http://www.aircooled.net/new-bin/viewproductdetail.php?keyword2=IGD0001 Anyone have any feedback on the ACN SVDA?

Still need help with the doghouse louver assembly if anyone has pics or feedback. Also on the preheat hose!
