I just bought a '70 beetle on wednesday. It has a 1600 dual port with 34 pict 3 carb and 009. Bad combo I know. The problem i'm having is when taking off from a stop I have to rev the engine up alot then let the clutch out otherwise it will kill. It's worse when the engine is cold. It's not so bad when it's warmed up but still noticeable. The previous owner did say he tore the engine apart and put in a engle 110 cam. The rest is all stock. Would that cam do that? Also it seems to get really bad gas mileage. I drove it home about 50 miles. When I left the gauge read inbetween 1/2 and full, when I got home it was almost down to 1/4. So I put $5 in it which brought it up to 1/2 hen drove about 15 miles or less and it's inbetween 1/4 and half. Would the 009 cause that? I might just get a new svda from aircooled.net

Get a SVDA and do a full tune up.

The gas gauge probably doesn't work right. Just fill it up.

I put in a vdo sender that I bought new a year ago. It reads more accurate that the one that came with the car.

Let me re-prase that then ....

The gas gauge probably doesn't work right. Just fill it up.

Congrats on buying the '70.
That hesitation IS what the 34PICT3 + 009 combo is know for.

The 110 is an aftermarket cam. You shouldn't expect great gas mileage, especially if you are running a 100% stock carb and exhaust. The 009 is not helping your mileage.
The fuel gauge is not precise enough to be used as a measure of how much fuel has been consumed. What I mean to say is that just because $5 of gas moved your gauge from 1/4 to 1/2 is no indicator that $20 will exactly fill the tank from empty. My tank doesn't move the needle from "F" until it is down to around 1/2 full.
The proper way to measure fuel consumption is to fill the tank and note the mileage on the odometer. Drive it around. The more you drive the better, more accurate your results will be. Refill the tank and note how many miles were traveled as well as how many gallons/litres were needed to refill the tank.
Divide the miles/KM by the number of gallons/litres to get your fuel consumption.

That's helpful but you may need to look at rejetting your carb to match your cam.

I think Ashman's right about rejetting the carb to match the cam...
I was thinking about buying a bug last year that had a "mild" cam in it & wanted to go back to a single center carb... all the advice I got was it wouldn't do well... that I'd have to get either a Weber progressive carb or dual carbs to work with that cam.... keep it in mind, that may be part of the problem.

Well next summer I plan to put either a set of 34mm ict's or 35mm solexes with chokes. Which would be best? And will they both work with a svda? Then I was thinking about some 1:4 ratio rockers. Are they just bolt on and go or what needs to be done?

Better check with the Aircooled.net people for that kind of advice. They would guarantee the combo is right for you...
