In the Fall I hope to have the cheap brown paint removed and painted these colors. Sage green with Mexico beige.

Was that a scan of a VW ad? Interesting that it has a Westy pop top and jalousie windows, but appears to be a passenger inside, no cabinets and spare tire in back.

It seems that I have seen this picture in another thread, something about that color scheme being like a special "Wild West" scheme for a World's Fair or something... But interesting about the Westy stuff on a passenger bus in what looks to be an ad.

I'm pretty confident that's a photochop.

I miss those days (minus not having The Samba). I haven't had a cell phone in a while and I don't miss it.

Anyway, I like the brown bus. The paint job looks cooler than most aftermarket jobs. I like the stars, too.

A few things I noticed this weekend while exploring the underside of my bus:

All four shocks are original VW Boges, the rebound damping still works but the bushings have seen better days, the ride quality is nice and plush compared to my last bus with gas adjusts.

I has the original CV joints, not sure about the boots.

It was spared from the dreaded thick black undercoating that traps water and junk when it brakes down. This one seems to have a thin waxoyl type coating on it that comes off with Purple degreaser, brake fluid or even gas revealing the paint underneath. I would like to clean it all off and have it recoated with a similar product.

I'm guessing the front end is stock as well except for the steering damper which was replaced before I bought it.

The rubber brake hoses I replaced as soon as I got it, they were original and severely cracked. I took care of the fuel lines as well.

This past weekend I replaced my dipstick boot and cleaned up the oil off of my heat exchanger from my leaky valve covers, I replaced the gaskets and they no longer leak. I scrubbed the bottom of the engine to clean up all that oil from the dipstick boot leak. The only place that seems to leak now is the seal between the engine and trany, it is a slow leak, not enough to drip on my garager floor.

I reajusted my timing and idle, I was off by a bit and the increased performance is noticable.

I checked my voltage and it is running at 13.6 at idle which seems to be enough. The battery is probably 4 years old.

How high should the rpms be with the aux air reg kicking in on a cold start? Mine were 950 slowy dropping down to 700 over about five minutes and went back up to 875 as it warmed up some and up to 950 after a sprint on the highway. If I tap on the gas pedal when the AAR is on it seems to turn off causing the rpms to drop untill it warms up, is this normal?

I also sprayed some grease all over the backside of my door lock assembly and now I can easily unlock my door without fear of brakeing the oly key I have.

I am getting ready for a road trip to Sand Dunes Nat. Mon. and Taos NM. I have a few more things I would like to take care of before then like adjusting my rear torsion arms.

That hitch rack is a Yakima Rimroc, if you can find one buy it. I also have a Saris Bones RS which is an excellent rack for a bus. The steel straps can be placed in the rain gutter so you don't have to have the weight of the bikes pulling down on your door and it takes only 10 seconds to install and remove.

I really like the brown paint. But then again, it's not my bus.

What's wrong with brown?

Nothing really. It's a decent paint job. I've seen it. It doesn't go with the original green interior at all though.

I saw the Dead nine times at the Rocks in the early eighties. I wish I had my west then.

I like the brown. It makes it unique.

Brown buses are beautiful ! Red Rocks is by far the best place to see a show.

fastwagens Thu Mar 03, 2011 5:07 am

BROWN IS THE NEW RED.

whoever striped it probably thought it should match the top and bumper, but didnt realize it would be too much contrast. if the stripe is a sticker, i would just get it off there and find some orange/yellow colored stripes for it.
