View original topic: Blaupunkt and Aux Components -DIY DIN cable adapters
DeMinimis Fri Nov 20, 2009 9:10 am

I've been searching around for a bit now and have found some information that might prove useful to some Blaupunkt owners here. In some cases, you can fab your own adapter cables to run your ipods, sat radios, etc., through your VW's Blaupunkt radios. Yes, you can buy an amp with a mini aux jack, and that's an easy way to do it, but the purpose of this thread is to provide info on this direct plug-in method. First off, I'm not an electrical engineer. If you decide to do any of this, you are on your own. You can sometimes buy these connectors off an auction site for $59 and up (8-pin DIN adapter for approx $100 shipped from Germany). The parts needed to build these cost less than $5-$10. Everything you need is available through www.digikey.com , or other suppliers, including the DIN sockets. First thing you have to do is determine which DIN plug you have on the back of your Blau. Since most of you are likely to have a mono radio, then the first schematic is the only one likely to matter to you.

These two schematics are in French, but you get the idea (or use bablefish or other translation program).

Here is what a Blaupunkt savvy gentleman with decades of experience has to say: "There should be a blanking plug inserted in this socket which bridges pin 1 to pin 3, and pin 4 to pin 5, pins 1(LH) & 4 (RH) being the RADIO signal to the amplifier stages, and pin 3(LH), 5(RH) being the inputs to the Audio Amp. With the blanking plug removed, an external device-MP3/IPod, CD or Cassette Player can be connected. In the case of MP3/IPods, only pins3, 5, and 2(AF negative common) are used, via a screened lead with a 5pin 180 degree DIN Plug one end, and a 3.5mm stereo Jack Plug the other. Bear in mind that, with the blanking plug removed, there will be NO SOUND from the RADIO unless a DP Switch to remake the connections bridged by the B.P., is included. This was internally incorporated in the cassette and cartridge players used with such radios in the 1970s." Further, "I would only make two points, having worked as a repair engineer for a Blaupunkt Dealer for 23 years. (1)Pin 2, not 6 was always used as AF Common negative-pin 6 being the DC Negative. (2) A lead, wired as shown-i.e. without a 'Radio/Aux-in' switch, will be simpler to make up, but there will be breakthrough from the Radio unless it is tuned to a quiet place on the dial-if such a thing exists anymore!" -"Livewire?" UK Vintage Radio.

The 8 pin DIN Socket is wired the same way as the 7 pin one. Ignore the centre pin(8) In fact do not connect anything to any pins, except pins 1, 4, 2, 5 & 3, following the diagram shown above.

Again, I'm no electrical engineer. This info was found by searching and asking questions. Figured other Sambians might find this information useful. If you wish to add addition information relating to this type of adapter, please do.

A very timely post (for me at least). Was surfing the 'net just yesterday, looking for a way to modify the old Blaupunkt so my daughter can connect her Ipod. Will have to study the directions a bit to see how I can pull this off....
My Blaupunkt (stereo/cassette):

Is that M21 from an Audi, '84 perhaps?

jlex Fri Nov 20, 2009 1:31 pm

It came in my '70 bug when I bought it last Spring.
Cassettes weren't out in '70 (I think it was 8 track then), so the PO must have made the swap when cassettes came in & installed Alpine door speakers.
I remember looking at the back of the radio when I had it out to repair the washer switch & didn't see any round connection as is illustrated in your diagram.... maybe I can't make the conversion without that connector?
My daughter is currently running a cassette adapter to listen to the Ipod, but it's not the best solution...

:(

Found that same radio (Melbourne version which appears the same as the coberg) from an '80 Mercedes. I believe Blau switched from the DIN sockets to the blue plugs in the early 80's, but I couldn't tell you when. Seems I came across some cheap adapters for that style, somewhere. Like $14.99 cheap perhaps.

Yeah, I remember looking; definitely no 7 pin DIN socket at the back....
Nice set of schematics, if I knew what I was looking at...

If the DIN socket was used to hook up the speakers..?... then I definitely dont have that. Speaker wires have smallish 90 degree plugs (2 each wire) that look like spade connectors that push into the back.
These cheap adapters... are they someting that would tap into those kinds of connectors? I'd be interested if so...

DeMinimis Fri Nov 20, 2009 1:51 pm

No, they plugged into the back of the unit. Those plugs were used to attach Blau tape players, equalizers, etc. Your adapter MAY end up looking something more like this (although I'm not saying this is it):

jlex Fri Nov 20, 2009 2:09 pm

I see...
Looks like I've struck out again as I don't even have RCA jacks...your pictured adapter apparently uses them.
May not be able to do anything w/ this radio.

blurry but all 6 pins on mine have a connector in them

where does the others go

i Only have a mono speaker hook up
2 prong 2 wires

and what pins should the cap connect
Mine only has 2 prongs but they dont look at if they are connected

@DeMinimis

either you or someone else got a wiring diagram
for an automatic line in switching off/on?

it's less about an external audio player, I'd like to have
my navigation audio intercepting the radio on occassion.

Damian

If it wasn't for the little "+" sign on AA batteries, I wouldn't know how to install them in my kid's Air Hog. I am not the one to ask about electronics. Just got a little obsessive trying to figure out this one specific issue and thought I'd post up what I found. Sorry I couldn't help, but there are those on here that actually know these things and perhaps they'll jump in. Good luck.

re: warning about mono schematics of the first post in this thread

the added image on the bottom right (showing the 4k7 resistors)
will cause serious damage to the circuit board because its just simply
short-cuts pin #1 with #2!

I did not spot that in the first instance. the radio went dead in a small
cloud of smoke but could still be run via 12 V on the areal out.
that was because two prints on the board melt straight before vital
parts were damaged.

cost me an hour of work to reconnect (bridge wires), though I
got away eventually I am still pessid off!

below the schematics of BP Ingolstadt I/O pins.

Damian

where is the other part of that schematic

here is the one that was in my AM radio
but it doesnt have the 6th wire in the middle

So how are we to hook one
up

I dont want to spend 60$ for one already made

@ sharkskinman

my pic is an enhanced image from
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/blaupunkt_ingolstadt_au_schema_bn.php

I wouldn't bother to buy one, but when simple greed
is overtaking a reasonable charge for simply assembling
some penny parts I'd rather refrain to have one at all.

and although I trusted the web resp. the guy responsible for
the extra drawing above, I did not re-check with the schematics.
hence melted prints are falling under my responsibility.

in ashes

Damian
