Well, I havent been too active as of late.....in the VW scene anyway....school is kindof running my life! anyway, the other day i was talking to a work friend of my dad's about my bus. he loved it, and we started talking VWs. turns out, he had a bug setting out in a pasture. he told me that I can HAVE it if i would just come get it. that was around a month ago. today, I FINALLY got a chance to go get it today. as we were pulling up to get it, thoughts were running through my head: "Oh god, what kind of shape is this thing going to be in?" I was expecting a run of the mill super beetle that some good ol' boy ran through hell and back...well i wasnt too far off, but was still kinda shocked when i got to it. it's a 64 with a Baja kit...stinger exaust...the guy said it ran great in 2006, but the breaks went out on the back, he never felt like changing them out, got a different job, went to work, and just never moved it...he did, however, have the decency to take the newly reuppolstered seats out before he parked it for good. I still havent gotten them. they're in a shop, 40 miles in the opposite direction of where the bug was...those'll come at a later date. other than what i told you, I know nothing abou this bug...or bugs in general for that matter. its my first bug. so anything you guys can point out, any tips, hints, advice, or just remarks...feel free to post them. thanks for looking :D
still at the guys house

loading it up on the trailer.

got it home and started tinkering and cleaning:

GOOD LUCK??? i think you will need another can of WD 40... but really.. it looks like you have a good start I wish i had a 64 or older bug. Is that surface rust on the floor boards or are they just rotten? depends what you want to do with it depends on the kind of advise you get. i'd say start by getting running and fix the brakes and then let us know. GOOD SCORE!!

Brakes shouldnt be too bad to fix on it, I did my 63's brakes on a good weekend.

You might clean the fuel tank out and change the filter not to mention add a pre-fuel line filter behind the tank.

Also for the rust, if those two little holes are it, I'd patch them then get something to stop rust from getting any worse like POR15 or something.

the two little holes are it...as far as the bad stuff goes. I'm not much of a welder, but I have plenty of buddies who are. I'll probably go ahead and patch the rest of the floor boards in the front...just to be safe...and then I'm planning on sanding and POR15ing or bed linering the floors and kick pannels. the rust really isnt as bad as it looks in the pics...it holds me anyway. haha.

as for plans...I'm really not looking to "resotore" this baja...just have something to scoot around in and have fun with. I'll probably do a rattle can paint job on the interior and just paint the exterior myself once i buy my spray gun (which i've been planning on getting anyway) I think once i get it running, get it patched, get the brakes fixed, and get it painted i'll be about done...except for maybe a roof rack and some lights...Oh, and i have to get new front tires...they wont stay up... SHOULDNT cost me any more than $300/$400...hopefully...

haha, yeah, the breaks really dont bother me much...I had to replace them on my 67 chevy a time or two...didnt take too long...are they any different from chevy to VW?

hey guys, do any of you know where/who a guy can go to in order to get some photoshop work done? like anybody i can give a pic of my bug and they paint it on photoshop to look like i want?

BajaB Mon Nov 23, 2009 5:40 pm

you can roll on a paintjob and it not look too bad if you take the time to sand it properly.

You might also seal up the heater channels while you have it down and a friend with a welder helping with the floor pan holes. Mine wasn't properly sealed and cause of it I need a set of them and a whole new floor pan on one side.

If you dont have this book I'd advise getting a copy along with the Baja bugs and buggies book: http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Volkswagen-Alive-Step-Step/dp/1566913101

paint it. now. any color. could not be worse

VW uses a bizarro world brake plumbing system. you won't find a proper flaring tool at autozone

c-mack Mon Nov 23, 2009 8:25 pm
