Anyone know where these go? I didn't buy them, but I would like some sound deadening in the car... do these go on in the inside?

they go in the engine compartment.

Those go in the engine compartment, it's easiest to drop the engine to install them.

I bought a carpet kit also, and of course, there are pictures on the original web page (small ones) but no instructions

I bought the car without any carpeting, so I have nothing to refer to, I have no vdub to refer to, anyone have pics of what their carpeting is like?

If those engine bay pieces are TAR, I would tell you to NOT install them. I put some in and then sagged and got sucked into the fan!!!!!
Buy the Jbugs interior restoration video to learn about doing your carpet. I hate reading directions, but I'm glad I got that video, make a huge difference. Only thing I didn't agree with was that they glue every piece of carpet, every inch of it, so if you ever have to pull the carpet for wiring or to replace the brake line, you are screwed.

Putting in the carpet isn't brain surgery but test fit the whole thing before you start smearing glue and cutting things, different years require different kits and sometimes the kits get mixed up.

As for the sound deadening kit you got, it's for inside your engine compartment. If you still have the original stuff, pack it up and return it. If your original tar boards are missing, it's best to install these when the motor is out of the car. There are sharp metal tabs that pierce the boards and hold them in place. IF the tabs are missing, you'll need to figure out another way to attach them.

Id you are looking for a way to quite your interior, there are a number of products on the market to do this. Google "auto sound deadening" and you'll find alot of resources. Personally I used Dynamat in my '69. Covered everything inside, the floors, the package tray, the roof, inside the doors and rear quarters. The car is as quite as a mouse. Some folks don't like Dynamat because it's expensive but it works. Some other folks have used foil back insulation that you can buy cheaply at Home Depot or Lowes. I'm sure it works but I've never seen any lab comparisons between the two. Personally I prefer the proven stuff.

Also camping bed rolls work well, just the thin foam ones between the body and carpet.
