After I am done with the rebuild and have to disassemble it 2 more times, then install it and my car still doesnt start, then I will ship it to you.

Rebuilding a carb is something I have not done and with my background this is something I should done already, I want to give it a try for the experience, even if I dont use the carb.

Yeah Nick, that's fine with me and par for the course as they say... I spend two chances on most carbs myself before deeming them a DUD.

But there is always stripped threads, stripped jets/orifices and worn throttle shafts to contend with et al...

I am just saying that IMHO and experience wompninja's "30 minute and your done" is a not always the case at hand that's all.

And this does what?

gasoline is a horrible substitute. just shell out the $20 for the bucket of cleaner and do it right. lets think about this. gasoline is always in the carburetor, if it DID clean carbs dont you think the carb would never get dirty because its always cleaning?

I've rebuilt my fair share of carbs and the chem dip is nice but soaking overnight in gas does the trick too. It dissolves the old varnish deposits and gets most all the gunk out.

First buy a rebuild kit, and a gallon bucket of parts cleaner. Then strip the whole thing down completely, placing every metal part (no plastic or electronics) in the parts cleaner basket. Dunk it overnight, pull it out and wipe everything off with a clean rag. Blow out all of the nooks and crannies with compressed air and reassemble the carb with the new rebuild kit.

Finally think to yourself, wow, that was hard. 30 whole minutes of work and my car actually runs again. Why didn't I buy a new carb or send it off to someone so that I wouldn't get my hands dirty and I'd still have 30 minutes?

On a good day, if everything goes well and none of the parts are too worn, this can yield acceptable results (depending on where you set the bar for "acceptable").

Sorry keifernet, I meant no disrespect. I just feel that with a bug you should almost always try it first before sending it to a professional. You are definitely right that the strip and dip method won't always work but if the carb looks alright to begin with it's never let me down.

DON'T USE A WIRE BRUSH!!!!!

What had worked for me is soaking in a bucket of parrafin (kerosene to you lot) or diesel. This loosens the crud on the outside and it should easily come off with a rag.

You'll never get a carb to look shiny unless you
a) ultrasonically clean it
b) paint it (but gas will just strip the paint off again)

for the carbon black shit down the carb throat, use either oven cleaner or carb cleaner and a bucket of elbow grease, same for the fuel varnish in the float bowl and pump diaphragm housing

DO NOT SOAK THE CHOKE MECHANISM

a dremel with a brass or stainless wire brush will help no end but is not essential.

You will also need several different sizes of slotted screwdriver

a few rattle cans of carb cleaner and a bottle brush and toothbrush is all you really need. Soaking it in a bucket is OK, but again, it's only going to loosen the loose stuff. I've left some carb bits soaking in a bucket of parrafiin for 6 months before now, all that happens is they get kinda greasy and a bit cleaner. They still look flat gray

I partially disassembled the carb and the inside looks so shiny its like its new :D

I was looking through my VW parts boxes and I just happen to have the exact same

complete H30/31 that I removed from my car, I didnt know I had it, So I disassembled it

and used it as practice.
