I like those carb stacks you got on the motor.

looks good keep up the good work. if that motor gets in the way i can take hold it for you. lol. also like the vw wheel/gas tank mount.

Notched Fri Nov 12, 2010 3:46 pm

Those stacks are temporary. They're actually for one of my motors, but are there to keep crap from gettin' in...

 That wheel was to hold up the frame for the tank while we were fitting everything... It was funny that it fit.

Like the build!

Reminds me of when I was his age, just did not have the cool girlfriend who helped.

Notched Fri Nov 12, 2010 9:30 pm

 That's my daughter, his little sister, Megen... But, she is cool, and works on her own VWs!

On the previous page she was mentioned as his friend Marie, or so I thought so.

Good for her, great hobby.

Oh, Marie! She's a friend of the family and is in the same grade as Harrisen.

Hey Notched, I was wondering how tall the fuel cell you used is. And did you have any problems cramming it under the hood?
Thanks

Notched Sun Dec 12, 2010 12:21 pm

Sorry, just noticed your post. I don't have the exact dimensions, but it's tall, maybe 12" or 14" — It was difficult to put under the one-piece front end. That's why we angled it. Definitely not optimal. I think we will probably put it inside, where the back seat was eventually. I need to see if I can find a filler for it to go to the outside first.

Not much to update. Harrisen is a senior in high school this year, and has a full class load. Plus, he's taking classes at two different colleges.

We are having a tough time tuning the carbs, and he just finished making his own carb linkage parts. Hopefully this will help getting the carbs set up correctly.

Long overdue for an update... Just before Harrisen left for Oregon State this Fall, he almost finished his 4" widened beam

Old beam pulled

Getting ready to pull the old ball joints

Pulling the old torsion bars

Ball joints out

Torsions in and new ball joints

We just need to relocate the steering box, lengthen the tie rods and find some longer brake lines...

I had wondered how he has been doing on the Baja and in school. Good to see some action.

Notched Mon Dec 05, 2011 11:37 pm

Ya, not much time for now. Harrisen is a mechanical engineering student at Oregon State, and really loves college. He is having a good time with Vector Calculus and Chemistry this term. He will hopefully have some time this Winter break.

He did make these over the Summer:

And helped build this:

We've started (Me, actually) lengthening the tie rods. I have a question. We widened the beam a total of 4 inches. But, I would guess that making each rod 2 inches longer would be too much.

Anyone have some sort of formula for adding length to the tie rods?

Cut the short tie rod in half

Went to White City Metals

After an hour, or so, of searching, found the right I.D. tubing

Time to do some fabricating

Notched Mon Dec 26, 2011 9:54 pm

Harrisen started working on his rear suspension

Removing the brake lines and parking brake cable

Out with the old!

In with the new!

The old stock trailing arm at the top, and the new 3x3 at the bottom. Mmmmmm, beefy

Need to add the bearings next...

Notched Thu Jan 05, 2012 12:27 pm

Started pulling apart the old trailing arms...

Harrisen removing the bearing circlip

Circlip out

Punching out the old bearing from the trailing arm (Note notches for the punch — those Germans are smart!)

Bearings out with stub axle

All disassembled and ready to get cleaned!
