Anyone try it yet? A couple guys here said they had some issues with the one from Wolfsburg West.

Hey I have a 64 Bug that I switched form 6v to 12v. Do you need to switch out the blinker modules?

Actually, that one in the top link, that's the same thing as WW - that is why there is a WW at the end of the part number, they are just reselling WW's part. The 2nd link didn't work for me.

About the 1964, you won't need that large relay unless you are looking to add an emergency flasher system, which VW didn't introduce until 1966.

But, yes, the 6V flasher relay won't work on 12V. But on a 64 all you need to do is get the 3-terminal relay that VW used from the early 1970s into the 1990s, which goes by part number 111953227D or 191953227A, and wire it up like this:

Ok I see it now, ISP just took off the WW logo.

As for the 6v flasher not working w/ 12v system, my 66 was converted to 12v when I bought it, over a year ago. The original 6v flasher worked fine up until I dropped it when I was trying to clean up the wiring a bit.

Finding a replacement that functions like the original is proving to be a real pain in the @$$. I could go used but you never know what your gonna get.

I put in a 2 prong flasher with these instructions, http://www.type2.com/library/electris/vw-9prong.html.

The turn signals work fine but I have no hazards or dash indicator.

my 64 flashes really fast now that I made it a 12v. Is that bc I need the 12v flash relay?

Did you change all the bulbs?

I've said it here so many times before I'm kind of tired of it, yes, a 2 terminal flasher works. But I will not use them and do not recommend them. I don't like how they perform. With them, when you go to make a turn, the dash light, it lights up FIRST, then it has to warm up the relay with that small amount of current before the lights start to flash outside the car. Depending on the flash rate of the relay this can take a maddening amount of time, especially if you happen to drive in heavy traffic very often and need to be signalling lane changes. I had a two terminal for a while back years ago. when I changed to 12V and this drove me bonkers. Until I learned about the grounded 3 terminal relay. It's only a couple of dollars more, and you can find them in any junkyard VW from about 1972 to the late 1990s. It's VW's design, Common, cheap and they work better, that's why I recommend doing it that way.

I bought the WW flasher relay for my '66 when I converted to 12V's. It wired right in and works like a champ (useda zip tie to attach it where the old one screwed in). My original 6V relay still worked great but because of the higher 12V voltage it flashed way too fast. I highly recommend using one if your converting from 6V to 12V. They seem reliable, mine has been in about 4 years with no problems.

I dont like the 2 prong flasher either, it leaves a bunch of wires just hanging around(taped of course), but I need the lights to work until I get a replacement, either new from WW or used.

For a few dollars you can make a flasher with the Atmel U2043B.

I always use 2 seperate 3 prong flashers to eliminate the "Black Box". The way I wire the circuits it uses one relay for turn signals then the other for the emergency flashers.

Got a diagram?

ok how about one in english? :?

tb03830 Sun Dec 20, 2009 2:27 am

Ha

Just use a off the shelf. It will work to. The circuit board is finiky and exposed.

Kafer66 Sun Dec 20, 2009 11:37 am

Here is what im trying to do:

The flasher system has 2 sides, one for turn signals and one for hazard or emergency flashers. I have found instructions to use a generic 2 or 3 prong flasher to make the turn signal side work.

Now I just need to find how to wire the hazard/emergency flasher side.

glutamodo Sun Dec 20, 2009 1:32 pm

Heck, I tried to answer this earlier but my internet connection went down and it looks like I lost it.

Try again I guess -

Well, what is needed is a way to connect all 4 bulbs together and also to a flasher relay. You can do that with say, a Double Pole Double Throw relay. Or another way to handle everything at once is to use a later VW emergency flasher switch. Starting in mid 1968 VW did away with the big-ass flasher relay and instead incorporated all of that switching into a more complicated switch. The switches aren't cheap though, plus it uses a different knob and mounting nut than a 66.
