I purchased her December 1, 2009 for $1600. The owner couldn't get the lights, wipers, shift coupler or fuel gauge working. I didn't care, I had already sold my car and wasn't settling for anything else so I picked her up, drove her home and lurked the samba.

I printed out a wiring diagram and got everything to work except the turn signal makes a buzzing noise when activated. The shift couple is a temp fix until my screws come in from Cip1.

I also received with the car and extra sliding door, driver door, windshield, 2 side glass, dash, cluster, headlights, turn signals and other misc. parts.

First thing I did was change the cloth fuel lines. I've been driving her daily since and have had no issues. She is great and so far hasn't let me down.

BTW, the tires...I know, dangerous

Opinions suggestions would be great. Here are some pics

opinions? suggestions?

Buzzing turn signal might just be a bad flasher relay. Congrats on your bus!

Awesome, thanks for the heads up.

Thats a SWEET floor repair job. I might have to do this on my bus too....

Congrats on the bus!!! Nice find!!!

Nice bus dude, I like it. Nice stance.

What are your plans?

TheShane Sun Dec 13, 2009 8:22 pm

Sunroof...sweet. Whole bus is sweet too.

dig the STOP sign
doesn't look like the rust listened though.

make your engine look more like this:

search the gallery for other fine examples.

nothing is worse than a messy engine compartment to make a simple task harder and dirtier.

i'd go for a mechanical fuel pump, personally.

welcome

lmao nice one. I do plan on cleaning up that engine bay. My last car (87 3 series) always had an extremely clean engine bay. I've been reading here and there so that I don't have to post threads which have been answered already so progress is slow.

I plan on making it a moderate camper. I don't know if I should leave the sunroof (I need the cables and whatever else goes to it) or make it a ragtop. I would though really want a devon or dormobile top if possible.

I have NO INTERIOR so its a clean slate but honestly I don't even know how the interior on the bus is put together so that will be interesting figuring it out.

BTW, what should I search for photos of the motors? There isn't really a section in the gallery for motors

I got 75 matches with http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?search_keywords=1600+single+port tho a lot were bugs, try sp instead of single port and there's another 60, maybe a dozen actual engine pics in total...

Congrats on the bus.

Random side question: What year did VW stop putting these panels underneath? (Don't know the propper name) Same year they switched to the type IV?

borninabus Mon Dec 14, 2009 8:28 am

the pic i used was blatantly stolen from this thread:

happy hunting.

They're called belly pans. Not sure exactly what date the started/stopped, but IIRC they were standard on all sunroof buses.

Ah, I was searching for "type 1" and "engine". I'm new to the vw lingo. BTW, thanks for the link on the bay window engine thread! Will look into it

also, what engine does this bus have?

thegoodfight7211 Mon Dec 14, 2009 1:41 pm

WOW  Nice find for $1600! Mad style...so much potential there.

Looking forward to seeing the progress. 8)

that is one ghetto bus! the paintjob, the eight ball shift knob, the floor job with signs, the symboled pedals, that's sweet :D

ha ha thanks. I think my first priority will be to clean up that engine bay. The m-code is on the motor right? I want to find out what motor this is to start looking for parts. PO said is was rebuild a year ago but you never know, plus I love cleaning motors.

I kind of want to keep that rake look the bus has but have trouble looking for tires. I know busdepot sells some and there a thread on it, but I am new to the metric sizes and would like a lower profile (60H maybe) in the front than in the back to keep the look it has.

Here's some info on tires:
