it looks great and i bet it heeps the heat off the motor

It is DEI, got it at the local FLAPS. If you do use it be sure to soak the wrap in water, it helps alot. And it's very messy and itchy. It really does make a difference with the engine bay heat. I ran it for 15 min at idle and could still touch the exhaust.

Thanks for the compliments. Maybe some day I'll have the guts to do the subaru swap and wiring. :D

It shouldn't be long now. I have an open house to attend this weekend, when is the next event up there? All I really have left is wiring the lights and turn signals. I haven't been able to upload any new pics because my house computer crashed. I will get some new pics up shortly and hopefully a vid of the motor running. It sounds pretty mean.

Alright life is back to normal. Got all my drivers loaded and I'm back online. The only bad part is I lost all my pictures from this build except what I posted on here. Oh well. Here are the pics from the day I drug her up to the shop for some fine tuning. Almost sites as high as my half ton.

I'll be she has more ground clearance than your truck. I know mine has WAY more ground clearance because of those differentials hanging down...

Nope. It's an adjustable ball joint beam with Thing spindles. It's all about rim offset in the front and rear to make them track better.

It does and I can't wait to run it against some of the locals out here in their half tons and jeeps. I will for sure get some videos of that.

love the stance of the car. it has come a long way.

question. was that running rich smoke coming out of the exhaust? do the carbs have to be set rich to even out when the turbo kicks in? it also seemed to have a dead spot. o well, you got it together and time to fine tune it.

great job.

It's been a while since I had a chance to get anything done, so I reread my entire build. What was I thinking? I was a newb to off road but thought I knew about VW's. My 73 was a lowrider mileage machine that I worked on all the time, but this is a whole different monster. I thought I was going to call this the winter/spring project...yeah maybe next spring. I thought I was going to spend 4k on this and have it how I wanted it.... I've probably spent half that much on beer for people helping me. Either way I just want to drive it!!! Here's a pic of the wiring I got done today. I ran out of wire and spade connectors.

The guys at a local VW high performace shop did put some larger idle jets in. They said it was running to lean at idle when they were dailing it in for me. The smoke has gotten better the more I run it. That video was from the first 1 1/2 gal of gas since the rebuild. About half of that gas got shot into the bonnet/trunk area when I forgot to plug in the fuel return line. I heard the motor fire and ran to the back. I wasn't till I looked under the car and saw liquid (AKA GAS) pouring out the front. Like you said, on to the fine tuning.

Any progress on this beast?

vdub411 Sat Feb 05, 2011 7:27 am

Wow it's been a while. I haven't had much time to get any work done on the bug. I bought a house and still moving into that, the half ton broke so I bought a Jeep. Trying to drop a 350 in it so I can pull the bug up north. My brother in law has a cabin in Mio so I hope to be up there alot this year.

My list of things to finish the bug is still pretty long but alot shorter than when I started.

Put in the new master cylinder
New clutch cable
New roller gas pedal
4th hole in my spring plates to hold camber/caster
Figure out how to wire up the windshield wiper motor
Weld on tabs for the off road and reverse lights
Change out my sand seal on the pully
Wire up the stereo system
Figure out how to mount 2 batteries in it (1 in front and 1 in back???)

All in all I think it really will be done by the spring this time. Can't wait to get her up on the trails. When is the first run you guys are having this year?

Finally able to get some stuff done on the baja. I got my tail lights, turn signals (that don't flash yet), reverse lights and head lights wired. The headlights are still in the mail being shipped here. I used some LED strip lights for the turn signals and brake lights. They aren't DOT approved but not really worried about it....yet. I couldn't figure out a good spot for the turn signal handle so it's hanging down on the front bar of the roll cage. The reverse lights are mounted where the old hood hinges mounted. Here's some pics.

vdub411 Mon May 16, 2011 3:34 pm

Finally got in my HID headlights. They look pretty good, but they are kinda loud at first (not like the holley blue pump but loud). Here's some pics. Oh and I think we have a pterodactyl somewhere in my area that hates VW's.

down here the cardinals are eating the wild berries and fighting with their reflections in the side mirrors, leaving a red trail down the side of the doors.

pafree: Sounds like some pretty sweet racing stripes!

Got a piece of wood cut for over the gas tank. I'm mounting the HID ballasts and a couple of old school PPI amps up front along with the batteries. Should help get some weight up front. I still have to build the box for the 12" L7 so it will fit behind the rear seat and between the roll cage bars. Soon I'll be putting ice and water shield throughout the car for soundproofing. It works great and is alot cheaper than dynamat. Then I need to figure out how to wire up the windshield wipers. It's only 4 wires one ground, one high, one low and one return. Anyone know which color wire is which?
