I talked to my mother-in-law on the phone today and she said the town is Aalst, Belgum, and her madin name is DeBuyscscher, although her mother's maiden name is Peleman. The cousin's name is Simone DeLuyck which is also the name of the shoe store, DeLuyck as I understand it.

I am not sure if the bus was a logo bus although that would be very cool and even better if someone had it with the logo still attached. It was nice to connect my Michigan "Motor City" in-laws who are all in the auto business to the Barndoor bus.

She my mother-in-law, is always happy to talk of her homeland and sharing this Barndoor photo with her has made my love for all VW especially the beloved Barndoor come full circle.

I'll be sure to send her this link so she can read it herself. Looks like a European vacation is on my list. 8)

News!!

I directly recognised the name De Luyck.
The neigbourhood of Aalst is know for its shoe-industry (50 years ago), but 90% where not shoes but house-slippers (pantoffels in Flemish).
There where at least 10 to 20 factories in Aalst, but there almost all gone.
I have contacted a shoe-retailer in Aalst, who is a friend/colleague of mine, and he lives only 15 minutes away from me.
He is out of the country, and he is coming back from a shoe-fair in Italy. He will look to the picture romorrow. The name of his mother is De Luyck.
He confirmed me that his grand mother has family in the US and that they are called Peleman. He thinks to know where the picture is taken.
Will have more news tomorrow.

But I am shure I will get the right info.

Bye.
Kurt.

OK Kurt,
I send the lady a link with the shoe store. It is located in
" 't gat van de mert....", alej, een betjen lieger, verboi lowie richting de weirf. ( flemisch regional language )

I have not contacted the shop yet. I was planning it tomorow.
Where the barndoor is now is not known I guess it is gone.
Greets.

Peter,

The more peaople that search, the more we have a chance on finding something, as far as I already learned the picture should be taken in Terjoden. Did You call the lady from shoeshop De Luyck? Does it still exists? today?

Kurt.

 I have good news and bad news...
THe good news?
The building still exist. :D
It is still the same  .
The bad news...
The barndoor is not linked to the shop.

I spoke to the owner of that building. Verry nice man and lovely shoe shop in the center of AALST.
The man and woman in the pict are his parents.
The Ford was their car.....
The Barndoor was probably
A: from a customer who buyed shoes
B: from a retailer who delivered material to make shoes.
Nothing is known about the bus.
Sorry guys. End of story .

I will not post a pict of the building like it is now. I do not want it. I am sure Linda will get in touch with the man here. I gave him my details and a print out of this topic.
He was delighted to hear that someone in the US searched this and was verry pleased that I visited him.

Best regards. Peter

Thanks Peter, for this story, even if the Barndoor wasn't a 'family-member', it was good to see an old belgian Bus here :D OK, let's search in our parents, grand-parents, uncles,.... photo-albums and POST some great cars on TheSamba :!: :!:

Even thought the Bus is "lost" it was exciting to read all the posts about the search. Nice detective work.

Great if you can get a connection between out of reach yesteryear's and our grandparent's era pic and a today's still existing scenery and people. That makes it real.
But still what about the VW ad in Linda's Mother in law's album???
probably some interest in buying a bus as seen for her own business ?

Even though the panel wasn't theirs, it still is a nice thought they had a 50 Ford to get to their customers or suppliers for business action.
Pure 50s style, probably they had a nice felt coat and hat on, along with some polished to mirror handmade shoes... :D

...G., coat, hat, shoes, OK!! but don't forget a big cigar for the gentleman and some make-up and handgloves in the glovebox for his lady :D Fifties, remember!!...

djfordmanjack Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:13 pm

that's why they bought a Ford, because the make up set wouldn't have fit in a Brezel glovebox, let alone the panel truck...eh, what glovebox?!

I got a call from my mother-in-law yesterday that her cousin in Belgium got a visit from someone regarding the Barn Door. The old woman was a bit shook up, that a total stranger went to her home with a family photo, or so that is what was explained to me. I don't know if it was a member or a lurker but I suppose I need to be careful what I say & post on public forums. PM me if it was you so I can clear things up and dig myself out of this deep hole

But here is the update, it was not the families shoe bus it was another business bus that was parked in their driveway ether selling or making repairs.
