my question is..

would the type 3 motor be good in the baja, or should i stick with a type 1 case?

is there much difference in power?

thanks guys...

No differance in power. There has been many conversations about the rear fan sucking up dust and blowing it across the cylinders / heads.

You can take off all the type three tins and sell them then put type 1 tins on the engine and have a upright engine.

They are basically the same engine, just differant sheet metal.

Back in the day when the Type 1 came with a 1200cc engine, it was not uncommon for people to install a 1500cc engine from a Type 3 in their buggies.

As JoesCool said, the problems with the fan intake being so low. It not only pulls in dust, but heat off the exhaust system.
Better to stick with the upright engine.
They can be converted.

yeah, i think i have all the stuff to do the conversion, like the upright dipstick.. etc..
my baja had the type 3 when i first got it.. leaked like a siv and never ran it..

i was just wondering if they had more power..
but i guess there the same..

thanks guys.

Hmm. the T-III is just a beetle in slim format, same HP potential.
one nice advantage of a flat motor is that the cooling fan is engine driven, not belt driven. so lose/break a belt and you only lose the charging circut.
if it's more power you're looking for on the cheapest and most available parts, then I'd say go T-IV from a 76-79 Bay bus (tough to see in my pic, sry)

as for sucking up dust, i'm no where near a dusty desert environ, and I don't wallow it in deep mud holes (anymore) so trails, and some great highway driving. (30" tires thing 4:12 trans) make a nice driveable combo. i'm running a 228mm flywheel, with very light trans bellhousing clearencing for fitment. a very nice & strong clutch combo for a baja. basicly the parts that came with the $100 bus engine, very economical power. paid more for the used progressive.
