There sure is enough of them on this forum. I've had a lot of posts but never a real "build" thread. Here is a list of what needs to be done on the dub.
-NEEDS new tranny (mine grinds and pops in reverse, is sloppy, and sometimes randomly pops out of gear)
-NEEDS new intake manifold and muffler
-WOULD LIKE to rebuild the engine in the spring
-NEEDS new brake drums
-Struts and shocks?
-NEED the bottom half of the back seat
Theres alot of little stuff, but i'll adress that as i go. This car is my daily driver and its been one heck of a time keeping it that way Also, if anybody has a late model paper element air cleaner with a working pre heat valve, that they'd be willing to part with, PLEASE let me know.
Heres what was accomplished today on the body. This is on the passenger rear quarter. Had to cut two bolts just to pop the fender off We're just going to rough the bodywork in for know (roll on primer and such) until the whole thing is patched and then the real fun will begin (smoothing, real primer, and paint!) Doing this patch by patch as he has available space in his shop. Other spots we have to patch: Rear drivers quarter/wheel well, rockers, and luggage shelf. Shouldnt be to hard of a trek though. Looking forward to paint by spring or summer, were just going to paint the outside and keep in Marina Blue. Cant afford anything else. Sorry if the pics are bad, i only had my cell phone with me.

| ive had this thing and driven it for over a year, i just havent been able to start on the body work until now. Like i said, i will be doing it one patch at a time and just roughing in the filler etc. When it comes time that all the patches are in, assuming i have enough money, then i will strip it back down, bodywork will be finished, and paint will be applie!!! :D :D Hopefully thats by sping. I already have all new window seals, headliner, and some smaller things. As soon as my POR comes in im going to strip the pan, paint it with POR and then HERCULINER truck bed liner. |

So i went back to the shop today, the patches had been finished on the passengers side. He mudded it up and rolled on some primer to finish roughing it in. Heres a before (from the drivers side though) and after.
Another problem i need help with. As i was driving it home, i hit a stop sign about a mile from the shop. Slowed down and stopped, and so did the engine, no amount of pedal pumping could help. Then, it wouldnt turn back on, it would crank like crazy, but wouldnt turn over. It took about 2 minutes of me blocking a busy intersection to get it to finally turn back on. This has happened three times recentely. Sometimes it happens if i drive for a while, stop, and then a few minutes later go to start the car again. I've also been noticing that when im stopped and then give it gas, it seems to sputter before it catches and actually acts like im giving it gas, and sometimes after driving perfectly for several miles or more, I'll come to a stop and it will turn off. Sometimes it will be able to start right away, and others will be like above. I really need help here, b/c this is my DD and cant have it out of commision any more than necessary.

Well the engine is dialed in pretty darn good now, i might need to bump up the idle to 1050-1100 for the cold weather, right now its at 900. Heres the newest addition to the dub. Boss headunit with aux in and cd drive. 2 6x9 kenwoods powered by a pioneer amp putting around 120 watts to the speakers i think. Made and covered the shelf myself. Had to make a custom dash trim plate for the radio to fit. The PO hacked it way to big, so i made this outta 1/8" steel. Had to put a bend in the top because the padding between the radio opening and the vents was falling apart. That holds it in and looks good.

| got the beater's air cleaner fixed (thanks to dad). Also replaced the plug wires and dizzy cap and points. He retuned the carb after installing the accelerator pump injector nozzle. Also retimed the engine. Now it drives perfectly. Instead of a 6 minute warm up period i start it up and go on my way after 30 seconds. No problems whatsoever. Shes a little slower than before but thats b/c i had the timing so far advanced. Also put a can of seafoam in the gas tank, and it seems to be smoother and a little more responsive than prior. Next weekend im going to bleed the brakes, they're spongey and i want to rule out air in the system or leaks before i replace the master cylinder. Also have some sway bar bushings to install. Then in the spring, the real work arrives. Its obvious that i cant afford to paint the car, so i told my mom to apply to overhaulin for me Anyways, when it warms up, probably over spring break, i should be dropping the engine and replacing the main seal and putting in a new(used) tranny given i can find one that works damn well and is cheap or free Also need to replace the tranny mounts and shift coupling and bushing. |

My parents told me when i came home yesterday that i need to start saving my paychecks instead of spending them. I still need to pay for insurance while im at college (even the the dub is staying home) and will need spare money (around 1G) just for fun stuff while im away. I have a full ride scholarship that pays room and board, tuition, food, etc. so Im set in that department. My plan was to clean up the hood i scored, buff out the OLD body paint to a shine, then get color matched spraypaint for the fenders and hood. That way my car was somewhat the same color and i'd pay less than $150. But since my parents said no more spending, i guess i'll be riding dirty for a while. I also will start stripping the chassis soon and will seal it with POR15 then herculiner. Within the next 4-6 weeks I'll be replacing the muffler as well.
Went to the junkyard yesterday with a friend and fellow dubber and we raped this vert. Its to bad we dont have the funds, b/c this thing was solid. IMO, we coulda thrown in a new engine and tranns and passenger side floor and this thing woulda been good to go. Took a hood and various other odds and ends.
Heres some pics of Mine and Ryan's Excellent Adventure.

coming along nicely
hurts to see such a solid cab in a wrecking yard
it should idle no problem at 900 even in freezing conditions
do you know if your preheat is working ok?
could be clogged up |

The car runs well and idles at 900. Drives good to, but the lawn mower sound of a hole-y muffler has gotta go. IDK maybe its robbing my performance a HP or two.
Me and my pal were bummed about the vert to :x Oh well, cant save them all. |

| Hey Jwagner. Saw you needed a lower back seat. I don't know if it'll fit, but I have a pristine back seat (upper and lower) from my 74 Super. I'm not going to put it in, so if you're still looking for one, let me know, I'll cut you a deal. |

got a lead on a new trans. Heres what gonna happen in the next couple weeks:
-replace trans
-replace rear main
-replace trans mounts
-replace shift bushing
-replace muffler
-swap oil drain caps (for one with plug)
-move fuel filter out of engine area
-replace windshield seal and passenger rear quarter
-put in front speakers (secret location )
-replace voltage regulator
Then im going to start saving for my engine build. Im looking for a cheap used 1600 case, preferably AS41. Shortblock is fine b/c everything else will be replaced. Im gonna try to build a 1904 with these specs:
-90.5 jugs
-74 CW crank
-1.4 ratio rockers
-fk7 or 8 cam
-dual carbs (whatever i can find on the cheap)
-Tims Stage One heads
-12v fly
-full flow
All in all it should put out 110-120 HP with LOTS of low end torque. Maybe get down the track in mid 14s if tuned well. I am now accepting donations |
