1. are there axles that are "soft" enough to twist some or even break instead of a gear breaking. just think it would be easier to replace an axle than a tranny, don't know how cost effective though.
From the sway-a-way site:
Porsche Axle Applications
Available in 2 grades of high quality aircraft alloy steel, these axles are heat-treated and center less ground for a smooth consistent finish. The end dia. has been maximized to get the most face contact possible, minimizing wear between the axle and cv. The spine length has been increased to 2 _” – 3” to allow the cv to float on the axle. The center part of the axle is sized to twist like a torsion bar under heavy loads absorbing a large portion of the shock transmitted from the wheel to the gearbox.
VW/Porsche 356 Axles
These axles are crafted from forged aircraft alloy steel, precision machined, heat treated and center less ground for a smooth finish. The middle dia. of these axles are not tapered like stock axles, instead the middle diameter is consistent all the way to the spline permitting the axle to twist under heavy loads, helping to prevent transaxle breakage. |

When i got my pro sand trans (HD side cover, super diff, hardend clutch fork?, lower 3rd & 4th, type 2 flange, etc. ) wright gearbox told me that the type one will be good untill you put a stroker crank behind it. so i assumed anything below 1915... he also said that at this point, 2nd gear is the weak point.
Maybe this helps? |

So from what i'm hearing if I get a type one tranny built right(when money starts growing on the trees in my backyard) and keep the motor somewhat mild. And drive it smart like, no seeing if i can lay a strip with 31x10.50's on the back, then it should be O.K. And if i get stuck, take it easy with reverse, if no luck then come-a-long or winch out instead of blowing up reverse. I guess I could even eventually install a turning break to help out in bad situations to keep me from getting into potential breakage situations.
Strictly Foreign is about 70 miles from me and I think they have a pretty good rep for building tranny's, I'll give them a call and talk to them when i'm ready i guess. hopefully they are still in business.
thanks for all the good info. any more opinions, facts would be great. |

One of the best plans I have read on here. Most say "gernade that B!+(%, there are more out there".
You can also watch the classifieds here. Every now and again some good built trannies come avaliable for cheap. I have bought 3 full tilt drag Type 1 boxes with all the goodies for under $ 1K that have never been run and would cost $ 2.5K to build over the last 3 years. |

Ok to bring back to life a older post.
I need some good T1 IRS trans questions answered. Sorry this will be long but I need to know before I spend too much money.
I been asking this question on other posts before and still no answer.
Is the older 2 side cover Code AH IRS 1972 and older trans stronger then the Code AT 1973 single side plate trans?
Are the gear sets the same only the R&P ratio different?
I read that 3 and 4th are stronger in the older ? less fine gears?
I'm running the Older code AH in my 1973 Baja now stock SP 1600, I have the largest tires that fit stock arms and The gears are good ratios 1st is good for rock crawling but not to low its not usable for trails. And I can run 75 mph down the hwy.
I talked to some re-builders and they talk like they are trying to sell me the newer single side cover trans but say they will put in the same gears as the older AH IRS trans.
I think I will only get the lower R&P but not the better gears of the older AH 2 side cover one??
They keep trying to sell me the newer single side cover I thinking I will get the less strong 3rd and 4th gears. NO SALE, If I ask for a older Code AH thats what I want and they make no effort to tell me why they keep pushing the newer single side cover trans. if its better or not a better way to go.
So I need to know What is better stick with the older ? or go newer with older R&P gearing?
Also do the Older gears 1st 2nd 3rd & 4th even fit the newer single side case?
Thanks,
Sorry for the long post but this is every thing I need to find out.
For the tire PSI that was brought up earler in this posting I run 10 PSI in my tires and run fast too never a problem. And 20 PSI on the HWY

About 1971, VW decided to put a finer tooth gear in 3rd and 4th. This was due to customer complaining about the slight 4th gear whine.
Yes, the older 3rd and 4th are stronger. I was rebuilding transmissions during this era, and up until this time, we rarely had a warranty claim on a 4 speed. But with the finer teeth, we started seeing stripped 3rd and 4th gears.
As for the single side cover, in my opinion, that case is a little stronger.
My brother and I used to drag race a bug, and we had trouble keeping the side covers on the older style.
BTW, I run single side cover trannies in both my Type 3 fastbacks. |

Ok thanks,
So can you put all of the older gears and R&P in the newer case? And the the good from both types? |
