View original topic: Windshield for a Rail

Hi, my name's Brent, I've been lurking for a while, but I have a question I haven't been able to find a really good answer to. :(

I bought a sand rail a couple months ago and I've built a type 4 2.0L motor for it, and done a bunch of things in preparation to make it street legal. I also plan on doing some light off roading and trail riding. I've read through the Florida statutes and it seems clear that I need a windshield. What is the best way to do this (material, fit, etc), and is this something I'd want to be easily removable, or will I most likely want to leave the windshield in all the time?

I'm on a budget so I can't swing for any type of super-mega-performance-racing-show type of dealio- just a simple windscreen so I don't get pulled over by the fuzz.

Thanks in advance for helping! I'll get a pic up soon!

you can buy a rubber install seal to fit the tube frame and have a glass shop cut some safety glass. probley under 200.oo

Just cut one yourself from flat glass if it can be flat?
Make sure it's the plastic coated safety glass though.

That's all we did, ours is bonded in though as I don't appreciate rocks remodelling my face.

Yes, the frame isn't curved or anything, I'm just not sure where to buy safety glass, or how to cut it straight. Any ideas? 8)

Welcome aboard! Any glass shop will be able to cut a piece safety glass for you. all you need to do ia weld in a frame (a piece of flat thin gauge metal) to the inside of your tubing. once welded, take the inside measurments (minus the gap of the rubber seal) to the shhop ant they will cut it for you. check out the show off your rai/fiberglass buggy thread for ideas. Good luck and If you have any other questions, just give us a shoutl Don't forget to post pics..

You actually don't need a windshield to be legal in Florida. The catch is if you don't have a windshield, you have to wear eye protection (witness all of the motorcycles without windshields in Florida).

My current rail doesn't have a windshield, or body, but the one I'm building now will have both. We currently use motorcycle goggles, but if its cold or raining, you have no protection :(

I would think if you had a windshield you would have to have wiper as well.
