View original topic: I think it's time to plan a project....

Well, it's been a while since I had an aircooled project, but I think it's almost time. I'm looking for something that is trail worthy, daily drivable, and looks great. That basically spells Baja to me.

A few problems though. I have a broken leg that's on the mend, so I'm not really in any shape to start anything, but I'm not at work so I have time to plan and source what I'll need. I'm not at work, so money is a little tighter than before, but I can work around that.

The plan:
Since it seems to be the style these days, I think I'm going to build a full bodied baja. Inspired by the type 82e, I'd run without bumpers. Instead, a rolled back front apron, hood and fenders, the bottom of which made of 3/16" steel and forms a skid plate to the beam. In the rear, I'd run a kubel-style exhaust which would exit from holes in the rear fenders. The rear apron would be pushed in and trimmed/ made removable and styled similar to the rear apron on a kubel. The fenders would be shaped to match in order to maximize departure angles. Similarly, the rear apron would be made from 3/16" steel and form a rear "bumper" and roll underneath into a skid-plate. Engine lid, hood, and fenders would be modified slightly follow shape of aprons.

Engine would be a 1600 or 1776 single port type 1 motor with single solex carb.
Front suspension would be a modified beam from an early bus with later bus spindles. The frame head would be custom build and strengthened with the center section removed to allow placement of a center-mount steering rack. Long travel bus shocks would be used.

Rear suspension would use a 62 bus trans with reduction boxes. Cutting brakes operated by a pair of e-brake handles.

Stock wide 5 bug rims would be used with 225/75/15 m/t tires.

Probably some kind of mild roll cage inside.

so now I just need to find a solid base for the project, source some parts, figure out parts for steering, get my leg healed, and get the thing built.
Lots of great little ideas running around my head.

I've built a baja look bug before, and I've had experience offroading both in my doublecab and in a real 4x4, so I know how and where things break.

I'll update as things progress.
