How do you tell what size engine you have on a bug? Are there stamps or ID's that I can look up the size online?

As long as your sure the engine is stock, then the Engine ID# will tell you the info you want from the motor, should be a number below the alternator/generator stand as well as on the bottom edge of the motor on the passenger side.

I bought the engine and the car together, but the two were separated. If I said I had no reason to believe the engine is stock, is there a way to tell from just the engine?

The engine nos will tell you what the engine was at the factory. The only way to tell accurately is to pull a head, measure the bore size and measure the stroke of the piston.

You just about have to tear the heads off the engine to be sure what it is.
Too many engines have been modified in the last 40 years or so they have been around. |
