I've recently gotten back into VW'S and pulled my 73 Super out of storage after 17 years or so. I'm 35, bought the car when I was 14, so we go back. I'm completing the build now that I've always wanted.

Here's a few pics of what I've started with (car was originally beige / stock, all the red and other mods were down in 90 (yeah, I was 16)
and some progress pics and the final concept.

My goal is to build a "Super Beetle Street Rod"

My plans are -

4" chop top
suicide doors
1/2 roll cage
graft in 55 oval window and dash
graft in 59 ragtop
full air ride
turbo powerplant

and the concept......

If anybody seems interested, I'll continue progress updates...

i like everything about your project except one thing....that oval looked solid that was cut in half.....WHY was it parted?? I cant wait to see the dash finished up on it...i love custom dashs on supers.

It was cut in half by the previous owner, reason unknown, and if you look close at the roof clip, a lot of rot, but just enought parts for me to use, and I have the semaphores for sale, so it's going to good use.

i guess....still every oval thats parted and cut up is one less and still from the looks of it it was MORE than worth saving...but i wasnt there to make that choice and at least it wont be hanging on a wall as art for the rest of its life like most clips sold....keep the pictures coming

yeah, it was hanging on a barn wall when I bought the roof clip, previous owner said his friend couldn't store the car any longer and brought it back to him in 2 pieces, and it was in great shape prior !!, but after it was chopped, he was disgusted and the roof clip sat outside for a long time.

Now that's a bummer, but I feel honored to have rescued this piece of VW history for a good use, even if it is for a custom project.

The windshield frame is pretty rotted on the drivers side, but repairable, and I'll throw it up in the attic and save it for somebody also.

seems like youre pretty able to do work you should convert it to right hand drive too!

maybe im just a little bias because ive always wanted a rhd car

Cool project,

Sucks about the Oval but like you said at least its pieces are going to good use. I noticed your in Michigan, if you have time check out my site and forums in my signature. We would love to have you and your project be a part of our Club.

Well then I'd have to find a RHD 55 oval dash....how much more s#$t do you want me me to get !!!!

I am left handed though !!! actually I've driven a RHD Porsche in Germany and took a long time to get the hang of it..

How will you make that work with the curved windshield?

with this...

A fiberglass mold of the stock windshield, used while performing roof chop to make sure geometry of window is the same, then use pattern to cut (yes, curved glass can be cut....) the windshield
