Please tell me you'll run a pre-'67 decklid on the car.. The chode-shaped late model lid will look oh so wrong with the oval window and vents!

Detroit73super Thu Jan 28, 2010 9:23 am

Yeah, the decklid looks horrible in the pics.

I am going to shave the louvers in the decklid, ruber seal groove has been shaved, and run standoffs. W decklid would make it appear that I am trying to "make or fake" an older car. If I wanted an older car, I would buy one.

You already knew that comment would show up towards you eventually from some jackAss.......but you shot that snit down before they had the chance =D>

More chop pics. Inner rear louvers painted prior to roof welding. A lot easier getting at least a good 1st. coat inside there while all apart eh ?

Some Topline suspensoins parts came today. Still need 4 wheel disc w/ slotted rotors to arrive

The roof clip and dashboard don't make it look like you're imitating an older car?

But hey, it's not my car, so I'll keep my opinions out of this thread. What matters is that you're doing great looking work on the car, and doing it how you want to instead of sticking to some defined look. Won't cooling be an issue though, with a big turbo motor under a closed decklid?

My bad for hating on your car, I just "don't get it". I'll keep that to myself from now on though, but will keep checking out the progress since you're doing this thing right.

1) many oval clips in all year VW chops, few other options. Otherwise, we all would. And you're forgetting the pre-67 headlights and the 62-67 tailights, ragtop, euro blades, lowbacks....

2) dash hardly resembles 55 anymore, and with no speedo, just tac, turbo boost, gas gauge, maybe V, temp, and oil pres.....

3) decklid standoffs will suffice w/ cooling - if not, what's another turbo every few years

4) YOU'RE JEALOUS you're not building a $50k VDub, just another car in my stable.

You should come to the Motor City sometime. We have this little thing called The Woodward Dream Cruise http://www.woodwarddreamcruise.com/
. The undisputed largest car show / cruise event in the world. 40,000 cars, 2 million spectators. Unlike Cali where most VW'S are all the same like sheep in a pasture, we've got many truly unique cars. OK so now to figure out how to drill my slotted rotors for a wide 5 bolt pattern.

Keep enjoying !!! lets get another shot at that concept eh ?

Are you saying your bug will be worth 50k?! I'm sorry, I mean, you're doing a great job, but that car is NEVER going to sell for 50k. Why? Because it's a VW. Is it super customized? Oh yeah. But it's a VW.

I think he is saying that is what he will have in it when done.

HA!, maybe sell for 15k, on a super great day. But that's not the point. It's a hobby, hobbies are expensive. You could put 50k into a Split and prob. only sell it for half.

The point is that everyone enjoys a good build thread. I would like to think that I am presenting a build that that is not in any way "better" then any other, but certainly on very high on a level of detail.

I "don't get" ANY Type 3's, non-split busses, or non-slammed hardtop Ghia's, and are not following any builds (except for that V10 Ghia, wow) because my interest is Zero, but I respect them as ACVW'S, and would I attend a Type 3, non-split bus, or non slammed hardtop Ghia only show. You betcha.

This thread is about a pretty much worthless (although it was in very good shape before 1st. 1/2 ass job in the early 90's when 1 was 16 and a little less financed than now) 73 Super Beetle. One day they will also be worth more, and if this car was a 51 Split, I prob. wouldn't be taking it down the same road (esp. if it had more than enough stock parts)

ok, less typing, more welding =D>

Alright, just checkin  But hey, the fab skills look good \:D/

only good :( ??? LOL Worth50k....I don't think Jesse James could even get that for his awesome Splittie, in todays eceonomy.

Detroit73super Fri Jan 29, 2010 5:06 pm

Ok, with a better view of the arse w/ the late decklid on (it's a 73 Super after all eh?) I'm kinda likin it, yet still unsure. No decklid standoffs. OR, remove the oval vents, but that'd be a shame eh ?? Maybe a ventless decklid w/ louvers punched in ?

Look at the size of the windshield area w/ chop compared to stock windshield mold

The windshield A pillars will be cut where they adjoin the roof to conform with lower section (Rick, you're a master) and works well within the parameters of the windshield fiberglass mold.

and the 55 dash graft (what's left of it)

and a paint sample

what wheels you going with to fill those wide fenders

Well if you look at my 1st post while car was Red, I currently have (2) 15x8 Centerlines and (2) 15x5..ish (?) I ran those with same size rear fenders, front fenders were stock. Will prob. run same size wheels but w/ stock chromies and hubcaps (like concept) same size, deepdish rear. With the air ride, I will 1st. have to check clearance / offset, etc. w/ Centerlines prior to replacing.

Reminds me alot of my old 73 super i sold 4 months ago....i miss that car. But do yourself a favor and dont do the whale tail. I LOVED it but got such grief from every aircooled knowitall about how its too 80's . If i was doing your car id grab a 68, 69 smooth deck lid and have hot school louvers punched in to cool it. DONT "F" with the "W" vents!! I LOVE your car and all your doing. I also ran centerline autodrag rims just like yours had...mine were HUGE in the rear and hope yours are too to fill up thise monster fenders you and i had! Keep it up!!!

Detroit73super Sun Jan 31, 2010 5:11 pm

Thanks for the credit on my progress.

No f'ing whaletail. I just threw out a Mulholland front end that I've had since 90ish. I woulda killed for the whaletale back then. I might watch Miami Vice in the privacy of my own home, but not driving around....

I just picked up a 68/9 decklid. Gonna cut out behind the license plate and install a metal grate, then might come up with a solenoid to raise decklid like powerized standoffs when motor is running, and lower when it is not, kinda like a Porsche

Here's more progress on the chop. Look how well the 1/4 window rear curve turned out. I've seen some pretty nasty versions of this. The roof has a perfect stocklike curve to it.

The interior will be all smoothed and painted. The only headliner will be the very upper part, and with the OG ragtop, it won't be much. The inner of the 55 roof is different than the 73, so those will have to be cut out of the 73 roof and fabbed in.

hemifalcon Mon Feb 01, 2010 3:49 pm

The super's are cool because of their better suspension geometry.. go with a late model wide tire that will fit under those fenders. That car looks low, fat, and if you have a huffer on an aircooled motor.. it should move.. Put some tires/wheels on it that will finish off the look and make the car capable.... And, in my opinion, just stick with that blue color, no two-tones!!
Very nice job so far!
