Yeah that nice lady was very generous with her prices. A couple of times the pickers actually gave her a bit more than she was asking for stuff, but they still picked it super cheap.
I wonder if the people on the show are told that the pickers are flipping the stuff for more than what they paid. Must suck to find out on tv that you got robbed.lol

People that think Medicare is free to us retired people piss me off!!!!
Now Medicaid is a different story.

[/rant]

I would kill to have insurance that good and that cheap.

Our Medicare premiums are over 10% of our SS income. Plus, I have had been paying Medicare premiums out of my paycheck from 1965 until 2008 when I retired. Just like FICA withholding, if I could have had that money myself, I could have invested it and been a lot better off.
And, a lot of Dr's now days will not take Medicare patients. Because Medicare reimbursal is so low.

Medicare isn't so bad. It's not managed care money, but it pays back pretty well. A whole lot better than the people showing up to the ER with no insurance with no intention of ever paying the bill.

They hand a flier to people telling them what they are looking for. If people can't figure out that these guys aren't just buying it for their personal collection, they should just give their stuff away anyway.

Every item they buy, is later listed on the show as to what they paid, and what it is actually worth.
The Japanese sword a couple seeks ago, he gave the guy $200 for it. He later found out that it had been shortened, and was only worth $400 at most.
Those guys are not getting rich. They are just making a decent living, but spend a lot of windshield time.
That truck they drive is not a real cheap one. Mercedes.
BTW, I am not sticking up for these guys, just because he has the same name as me.
I do not know if he is related.

Not to mention when they call up and say "Hi this is Mike from Antique Archeology" or the girl when the girl calls people I'm sure she has to explain what they do. And on top of all that they don't just show up with a camera crew, most all of this is "planned out" to some extent.

Even more reason for him to NOT be a jerk!

lol I have not heard one person say, I like Mike, and or his show! This is too funny! my only question is, how long will the show last? I have to say though, I want to see every episode, maybe make a map and take notes, give him a run for his money!!!

Did you notice the VW sign behind the Ice cream fountain. It looked like dealer display sign of some sort. I am pretty sure it was behind the Soda fountain . The camera just barely caught it twice.

I have said that I like the show.
Sounds like you have a bone to pick with Mike.

This show will probably make more people aware of the items they have are worth money, if not them, at least the family. Maybe in the long run the show will help some people and families.

In that regard, it is probably a good balance with a show called "Hoarders". In that show, the family of the hoarders throw everything out...some of it justified I'm sure. But, a show like "Hoarders" gives some families who have parents or grandparents that are collectors ammo to convince them that the stuff is crap and needs to be thrown out.

"Pickers" at least shows that a rusty sign under an old bus is worth some money and maybe stop some families from throwing stuff out that could actually help them with bills and such.

Besides, once these guys get to be well known, people will wise up and realize they can hold out for a little more.

I do have a problem with some who say that it is the owner's fault, they should do research. I researched an old porcelain sign that I've had for years and couldn't find out anything about it. I was going to throw it on CL for about $200. I figured it would help buy a windshield for the camper. My daughter talked me out of it, saying she liked it on display in my office.

A year ago, a sign like it popped up on Ebay. The buy-it-now was over $2,000. Only two were known to exist, one in a museum. Sometimes you can do a lot of research and still find nothing, so you may, like I did, think it is just another piece of Americana and isn't worth very much. If the sign were in pristine condition it could be worth up to $6,000.

i think they are giving life back to the items they buy. they do seem kinda scummy though.

not at all. I met mike in fla, at a flywheeler show. he was very nice, and fun to talk to. He even came to look at a bus I was selling that he was interested in. not sure if you misread what I was saying... I have read this thread and most if not all the people have negative things to say about their dealings.. but at the same time, everyone is looking for the next show! that is what I find funny. keep your pants on IOWA boy!!

After watching 3-4 eppisodes, I have determined that it is just another bullshit reality TV show no different then watching pro wrestling.

ratlookvw Tue Feb 09, 2010 3:21 pm

are you saying they are trying to make it cool for tv???? you think????

Anyone see this week's episode? The white singlecab got about half a minute of air time, the main guy was driving it to the doctor having thrown out his back or something. I recall the other guy bought a particularly valuable jukebox for way less than it was worth, first time I've seen the other guy actually find a good deal.

Fritter Wed Feb 17, 2010 1:33 pm

I felt a little different watching it this week....I am starting to think those guys are douchebags the more I see them pressuring 90 year olds about selling their stuff. I understand you can't take it with you, but something just didn't feel right....

AlteWagen Wed Feb 17, 2010 1:40 pm

Yup, typical flipper shit bags. I was glad to see the old dude on the mower decided they were jerks and didnt sell them anything.

I want to see them do the auction thing and have do deal with all the crap that comes along with the few good items in a lot.

ovalboy Wed Feb 17, 2010 2:29 pm

I like watching because I like old rusty crap too, but the show is too 'scripted' for me. Like the camera guy would really stand out there in the sun for 90 minutes filming the old fart sitting on a tractor... nah, don't buy it.

But living in southwest Ohio, I did recognize a couple of places they were at, and could definitely lead them to a couple more within a few miles of my house.
