I just realized last night, (hippie picker), maybe the only thing I dont like about these guys.
They cant pronounce the word "VOLKSWAGEN".
They pronounce it "VOTESWAGEN".
Hello, American Pickers, if you're out there, and you're truly VW guys, the name has an "L" and 'K" in it. Please Pronunciate. |

Even spell check caught the misspelling.
People need to remember the difference between "your" and "you're". |

| If they were educated enthusiasts they wouldn't call a bus a van, nor would they show a pic of a bay and talk about it being a 65... I would be okay with them calling a bay a van, no harm no foul, but calling a 70s bus a 65?? come on now... These guys know their stuff that is for sure, but I really doubt they have any history with V.W's |

Touche' Corrections have been made teachers.
 Dang it, I have always had a problem with spelling and "proper" grammar. I do get in a hurry sometimes while typing, but I can throw a stone hard, fast and far.
Do youz guyz pronounce the name "VOTESWAGEN" too? I know its not just a location issue, I hear it all the time.
I love the show and its...it's entertaining. |

Again remember it is made for TV... They asked for a picture with him and a VW Bus and he found that one, how many pictures of him and the 65 do you think were taken back then.
Look at any of the shows like that and you will find mistakes all over, Ice Road Truckers has some in every show or Wrecked (which I know some inside on that show). They make them to entertain not educate. |

I really like Pawn Stars so I thought that I would also really like this show, but no, I can't stand it. I've watched 3 episodes to see if it would get better but it hasn't for me.
I think the difference between the shows that irritates me is that Pickers aren't as honest, IMHO, as the Pawn Stars. Yes, they are both "reality" tv and it's staged but at least if a guy doesn't know what something is worth on Pawn Stars, they bring in someone that does and then barter. With Pickers I see them pick up things for virtually nothing (railroad lantern light) and act like it's worthless and doing the owner of the item a favour. The seller asked $25 and the Picker said, "How about $20?" Those items are worth a mint.
People need to earn a living but I just get that greasy used car lot feel from Pickers. |

| The problem with your thought is that as you say, the pickers ask "how about $20". Not "take $20 or we'll kill your puppy". They ask a question, the owner of the items has a right to say "how about no". |

Have you been to a flea market/ antique show?? I price all things at them to negotiate cause that is what happens (not so much at VW shows though due to a different market concept). Lets take the 2 toy trucks I bought Tuesday at Brimfield, The dealer wanted $170 for them "but I'll do $125" and I counter offered $120 ( I like even numbers). As far as railroad lanterns some are worth a lot but many are not big buck pieces. Next remember travel costs and "marketing" money (phone, listings, show space, ect) along with wasted stops ( "I got a garage full of old VW parts" = a pile of advanced trash that fit in one seat of a car). Then as true "pickers" they are buying to sell to a dealer that then sells to the collector.
Pawn Stars do some weird stuff, I have a bunch of toys I will sell them for way less than they have paid ( the duck pull toy was made by N N Hill 3 towns away from me and mint in box may (and I mean may ) sell for $150). They are also sitting in a store front waiting for stuff to show up that they then sell to the final buyer. They call in experts and have the seller come back, Pickers are at the house call and can only go on their knowledge or gut feeling (easy way to pay way to much and loose money) Total different land. |

My issue is the underlaying deceit (I'll give you $20 for something that I know is worth $400 and you'll take it because you're a moron) in the transaction. The difference here is with Pawn Stars an "expert" will come in and say XXXX goes for $4000-$6000 at auction these days, then Rick starts with "I'll give you $1000." and the negotiations start. It's more of a level playing field.
I guess your arguement is that it's OK to take advantage of people because you can. That says something. Don't bitch when it happens to you because I'm sure it has and will again. |
