I have been working on the d.c. as work and family allow, which is slowly, or about as fast as the speed of life.

The clutch lines are done and tested which I wanted to do before I pulled the drivetrain to work on the oil system in case the clutch is seized (common for a engine dormant for years) and it was. Should be a easy fix.

I also have most of the brake lines run, not so interesting to look at but pretty important.

The big task next is the oil system.

The 911 engine relies heavily on oil cooling, my engine, a 3.2 has stock a engine mounted cooler and a secondary cooler in the front passenger wheel-well. For my build I am using the stock oil thermostat (pictured in last photo)
which will be plumbed in with -16 hose to a Fluidyne oil cooler cut into the front bumper. The line then returns to the thermostat and then back to the Canton filter (blue guy) and then to a custom dry sump tank.


The design of dry sump tanks seem to vary greatly in internal baffle complexity so I am using some stock production parts in the round "swirl tank" part in the back and add baffles to the forward section as built.
I talked to Seth today and he approves the design so on we go.


The total oil capacity calculated from the mock-up is a bit over 3.5 gallons so oil changes are going to be a bit pricy! :shock:

Here is a shot of the rear shock and hitch bracing from the last fab session at Twisted Minis, I just liked the way it looks.

Thanks g1-driver, I think it takes even more courage to finnish a project, seems like that is the hardest part.(I am working on it!)

70 140, pocket holes or external stagnant air vortex enhancers to aid in anti-de-aration of the air in train'd oil baffling system?

I'm just glad to see your sump is made from plywood and not OSB. So many people cheap out on the most important parts. :lol:

James it's a cool dc. But I would have used mustang 2 parts rather than porsche! Snorkelstang is a nations pride! You incorporated German parts on a german car... Lack of vision I think sir

Ya, not on this build, plus I think the cherry ply is set off by the grey.

Not sure who james is, but of course I looked into using mustang ll parts, but could not find a donor car that was not pristine or parading on the show circuit.

I have been working on some more small stuff (there is lots of small stuff) (70 140 will notice the informal use of baltic birch multi-ply)

Seth and I finally got together to build the dry sump tank, or "Franken-tank" as it is composed of the carcass of a stock Patterson Tank and some aluminum sheet.

It really is a woods of the world exhibit. Is that yellow cedar wedging your sump in place? :)

Nice build on the sump. It fits the space well, and those baffles look good. It looks like it has some serious capacity.

Sorry 70 140, but those are scraps of delaminated, highly oxidized russian birch, often mistaken for Alaskan Yellow Cedar. :)

The sump took alot of thought to make it as functional as possible and fit into the existing space. The tested capacity is now 20 quarts. :shock:

Speaking of wood, what the buck is this!

That last post is of a form I made to press some thin sheet aluminum into a vent cover for the oil fill/dipstick/breather filter which will be cut into the side for easy access. Seth pressed out a workable part from the form which he will metal form into shape.

This is the vent/fill box part which gets attached to the inside of the truck sheet metal.

I had a e-ventful evening roughing in the oil-fill vent box.
More to do here as I need to cut the vent slots in the blister thingy.
Seth did not have a chance to metal work the cover so it is a little rough, if I mess up the vent slots or want to make a more finished piece I still have the form to press out another one.

I made the cover wing shaped to give it a low pressure zone where the slots will be cut in to help pull out the crankcase/ dry sump fumes. I will also be replacing the engine intake vents with a aluminum scoop, so it will be kinda matching (in reverse).

If I do not like the finished look I will make a flat louverd cover, which is also common on some vintage Porsche racecars.

The vent clears the gates easily, the future engine intake scoops will be maxed out in clearance to make as large a section as possible.

It looks a little abrupt in the photos but will soften when I paint the truck silver or mustard in the future.
