| the starter turns and doesnt turn motor over, sounds like its not engaging... any ideas? type 1 motor on bus transaxle and starter is not oem with the support rod thru the gear, it came out of a type 1 transaxle and just has the gear on the end(no support rod) is this starter compatable? |

The starter (Bosch SR17) is probably comparable with a lot of things, but there is I think at least one series bus transaxle that takes a starter with long shaft because the flange where starter mount to bell housing face is thicker....

With no support shaft, it sounds like he has an automatic starter.
If the trans case it right, it will work with a manual transmission. |

Might you have a 6 volt flywheel and a 12 volt starter (diameter of 6 volt flywheel is smaller) also stater may be spinning up but is solenoid pushing pinion out to engage flywheel?

| its not a 6 volt fly wheel and this all was working ok when it was in a type 1 trans, now switch to a bus trans so im guessing its not pushing out to engage the flywheel |

If that is an automatic starter, then you should be able to hook it to a battery off the car and test it.
It has its own built in front support bearing. |

| sometime a 12 volt flywheel with a machined 6 volt ring pressed on it fails because the ring slips out of range of the bendix gear on the starter . the ring needs to be moved back into proper position on the flywheel and tack welded to stop further slippage. it happened too us |

| Measure from te face of the starter flange to the flywheel and then measure the throw ofthe starter. |
