Hi there,
I am currently renovating an old OG 10 slat Made in Germany roof rack for my 67 Beetle.
Can anyone here help me in finding info about the length of each slat for this rack.
It this version:
Thanks, Al. |

If you have the old slats, just measure them. or get the measurement from the rack itself.

Hi. The thing is that I measured the only slat that was whole in the rack that I bought and the new slats rest on the center tube but towards the end they are as far as 1 inc from the tube. Something is not as it should be and I suspect that the only slat that I have is simply swollen after being exposed to the elements in Iceland all these years.
Exact length of the slats is therefore appreciated.
Thanks, Al. |

If "the tube" you are refering to is the center support bar than yes, your wood is swollen.
But this isn't rocket science here. Get your wood and you can lay it on the rack this will get you a general length. Then cut it to the right size till it fits. Model the rest off the one you just made. Done.
I had to do this with my rack, it's a bit different than yours, but the process is the same.
You can do this, work slow, and make small cuts, when it fits and your happy, you can then use the one to make the others.

Thanks for your help.
The thing is though that the center support bar was considerable bent downwards when I got the rack so I had to bend it back again, but having no idea how much I should bend it back correct length of the slats would work as an indicator on where the bar should be.

Well, going off the pix you posted, it looks to have the same bend as the ends (where the ends of the slats connect). That could be a good reference point.

The pic posted is not of my roof rack. The center support bar is more out of place and cannot be used as a reference point.
So I'd appreciate if someone out there has the correct length of the slats.

I don't mean to be rude here, but your making a mountain out of a molehill here.
The ends should have the same curve at the center support. Use the ends as your guide (now you will have to get a coat hanger and copy the profile) to get the center back into shape. Wood usually contacts (shrinks) with age. So you almost can use the one good slat you have as a reference.

Thanks for the help. I will try this out.
Still, if anyone has the correct length I'd appreciate if he or she could post it here.

Ok Al just letting you know the pic you posted is not of an OG rack!!! Now that being said if your rack is OG like my 10 slat rack! which is unrestored with OG wood. Just saying this because the original is not the same as aftermarket!!! Mine measures 34 in alittle more that a half inch long! and an inch and a half wide. Heres a pic of my car with the rack hope this helps.

Apparently they don't have molehills or mountains in Iceland. |

How can you tell the difference between and OG and an aftermarket roof rack?
Thanks! |

Anyone else that can confirm with me that the length of the slats is:
"34 in and a little more that a half inch long"
Thanks, Al |
