Pearl White.. Damn...
Emeritusx, would you mind sharing your body id number? I'd like to reinforce the info that the body number can reflect the month before the chassis date.
I am not sure what you mean... Where is the body number? the vin is in the pic, 216 000 373 |

Good point. I'm realizing that it's more likely not the original engine. No big deal. I'm trying to stay as true to the car as I can for my repair/refurbishment, and just want to learn as much as possible. I'm amazed that we have as much information available as we do. (TheSamba is a great resource.) I can think of some other vehicle makes/models with a fraction of the production history and virtually no clear information whatsoever.
The incomplete and sometimes peculiar histories of these cars are part of their appeal, I think. That's why I ordered the birth certificate. Part of the need to document and categorize. It's like a 47-year-old detective story.
Yeah, tell me about it  I love all original cars, and my 64 Bus is cool since I know it's history to the original owner, but my 59 Beetle on the other hand, it's so pieced together from so many other cars. It's cool too, like it's defied the odds. Since it's a Euro car, I was really happy to know where it was sent to originally. All I know is that and that it ended up here sometime before 1985. How and why it made it from Freiburg, Germany to Alabama I'll probably never know. I wonder where all that car has been. It's part of the appeal to me knowing these things have been around so long, but I digress  |

Excellent. Thanks. And just to clarify - they didn't say it "wasn't original", only that "they couldn't confirm it was original." I get what you're saying about the engine being a month or so off from the body/chassis VIN. Volkswagen would not have had a stockpile of engines where one sat unused for a year, right?l
I think that's the same thing but in their wording but I don't know that for sure. |

Does anyone have an email address I could use to request an update? I sent my Birth Cert. request on 29/03, and not heard anything.
I've replied to the email I received, but got a delivery failure...

The destination code is simply what port the car came through into the US. My '64 Bus came through New Orleans but was sold new in Mississippi. Typically VWs that came through New Orleans were sold in the southeast but not always. |

Right-i-o, where to start...
I've had my birth certificates for a while now but not taken much notice of them as neither of my busses were on the road, i just filed them away after having a quick look over them.
First thing i noticed was that it told me my March '55 11 window had the 'Extras/Options' code of 'M 083 Walkthrough cab', but it's not! I've given the bus a good going over with my beedy eye and unless volkswagen took it back and replaced it themselves it's always been a bench seat model.
Second up is they've mixed up the chassis number for my '54 Single Cab making at a 231 Kombi instead of a 261.
The number is 30 higher from mine so i'm guessing all the other info will be wrong too, bummer.
Lastly, they couldn't get the details of my lowlite Ghia as the 'micro fiche' is crumbling and illegible. Nothing they can do about that one i guess...
So, my question is, has anybody else had issues with their Birth Certificate and, if so, what did they/you do about it?
Cheers Anton |

M83 means something different for the early Buses. The 83 number was reused later for walk-throughs.
If they sent you the wrong information, I have seen people post that they contacted them to get a correction. |

Thanks boss :D
Also, just for your records, it has both the following codes:
M 018, M 86 cannot be identified
Bus is a 211 vw Micro Bus, built on 19th March 1955, left factory on 23rd March 1955 destined for the good old US of A 8) |

Thanks. Early non-barndoor, very cool.
M18 is probably sealed-beam headlights for North America. (My theory) |

Does anyone know a way to get more information, like what dealer a car was sold at or a general area even?
It seems like there has to be some way to do it. |

Ordered mine on Wednesday May 26, 2010 and....I'm still waiting....
I'm like a kid that ordered something from a cereal box and I'm checking the mail every single day (last couple of weeks) expecting something from Germany...
Another Samba member said when I first ordered it, "Not to hold my breath" and I have been...
I'll post a copy of the Certificate when it arrives...with my luck it's probably sitting in the mailbox right now...let me go check |
