Well folks,
Was talking with the wife and she said "lets get another VW" so grinning from ear to ear I went looking for a VW (I think she wanted a bug) and I found this 63 ghia. I t was a second owner car and although it had been repainted at some point in time it still retained all of its orignal components intact! It has a few bumps and bruises, 6v, 40 horse (locked up) but I just could not pass it up. So I have a couple of questions regarding the side moulding on the car, it looks kinda like an aftermarket trim or was this moulding a VW option? and the other is regarding the trim rings on the wheels (only got 2 of them) are they original to the car?

Looks like a nice original car..trim rings are original, side trim is not.

I have that same side trim and was wondering about it myself. It second owner had the car forever and can't imagine she would have changed it....

Looks like after market mouldings that were available off the shelf back in the 70's. Used to prevent door dings on the side of your giant Chevy Impala and similar cars!

Must have damaged the original mouldings and these were a cheap replacement. Probably stuck on with two sides tape.

That car is a thing of beauty! Clean her up and roll! Oh yeah! You will need a motor!

I am extremely jealous of not living on the correct side of the country for finding VW treasures!

Well her are a few more photos of the new car. As i stated the motor was locked so before i gave it its final rights I decided to pul the plugs and spray some penetrant and Marvel Mystery oil into the cylinders. After 24 hours it started to spin free, so in the first photo I thought I would borrow a inspection camera from work and look into the cylinders, All appeared normal!

Dash is not hacked up!

A little cleaning of the carpet..what a difference!
[/img

Seats are intact, but the top is gone on the drivers seat
[img

Under the trunk is clean. Now where do I get a replacement cardboard cover thingy?
[/img

Well as soon as I can get my hands on a 6v battery I will try to spin this thing over, if it runs..The 40hp stays, if it's junk 12v conversion and a larger motor....Budget minded of course!

not to be indelicate, but how much did you pay? from the picture, i think your sprite can may be misadjusted. rotate it 90 degrees anti-clockwise and i bet she starts right up.

I found the car on Craigslist and paid $1500, it was a local purchase here in Los Angeles.

WOW  ... That is one clean car, and for the money a steal :D Those aftermarket side trims are a '70's product, when you pull out the rubberized inner piece you will most likely find that a hole has been drilled on the end of each mldg and it has been riveted to the body. Later in the eighties they switched to adhesive. I haven't seen this type in forever. nice score she is a beauty :D

that trim isn't as nice but its more durable, if my ghia had that trim i'd leave it on.

If you hear something like a low, distant thunder out there in LosAngeles, it's just all of us in the NorthEast banging our heads against the walls for the deal you got on such a seemingly solid car!

Wishing you success with getting it started! Then give the car a good wash, and get a "cleaner wax" or polishing compound to get some gloss back on that paint!

Cardboard trunk liner can be bought from KGP+R up in Ventura.

When I called on that car they told me that all it needed was a new battery to get it running...
