Cassette players for aircooled VW's are harder to find, since they were introduced in the 70's (late 70's ) by the time the Aircooled phenomenon was running out of steam (beetle production phased out in Germany, and so on ) ...
look here for some models with cassettes :

Is there a cover that plugs into the DIN jack?
If there is look for the jumper on it. The jumpered pins are the audio in and audio out.
The audio looped through the cassette player and when a tape was insereted the bypass switched over to the tape.
There is a chance that the DIN jack is for an external amp and will be of no help to adding an iPod.
Post a higher res scan of the full schematic. |

The schematic shows a 5 pin DIN plug not the 6 you have, that's what I went by for the pinout.
Is the schematic for the radio you have?
Is there a cover that goes on the plug? |
