Hi folks; I have a 69 Westy and I want to upgrade the generator system. Would like to get away from the voltage regulator set-up and go with a solid-state unit (for no other reason than the VRs are hard to find replacemnts for).
I do plan to install a stereo, and perhaps an after-market cigarette lighter, so I can plug-in cell phone charger etc, but don't plan much more upgrades than that.
Can anybody give some practical advise on this upgrade??
Thanks |

| Any of the alternator kits most parts suppliers offer will work, try to avoid all Chinese if possible. Even better try to find a used German alternator stand, tins and pulley, the more OG stuff you find now the less headache later. |

Oh,,,,,tins will have to be replaced??? (or is it just the tin that goes through the fan shroud??)
I was hoping to just get a bolt-in conversion on without having to change the stand etc..... Guess not, hugh?!? |

| Depends on what's in there now, if it's a 30A the tins are similar, if it's 38A nothing will fit. The stand is different no matter what. |

| There is no plate, the numbers are stamped into the body ahead of the terminals. look for things like GR15 or GR17 and 14V30A or 14V38A. |

| You can get a bug generator and regulator, then just swap out the generator backing plate/tin piece to a bug one. The bug regulators and generators are easier to find. |
