I just replaced my battery in my '71 and all the electricals work, but when I turn the key to start the engine everything shuts off. Any Ideas?

Did you do anything other than just replace the battery? And when you say all of the electricals work, is that because you turned the key to the first position? Do you have the factory original switch still? Why did you replace the battery? Just some questions that might help in diagnosis.

Nope, all I did was replace the battery. It had a crack in it, so I turned it it for a new one. Yes, It is in the first position, but as soon as I turn it further everything shuts off. It is not an original ignition, the PO hacked that out.

It works, one of the hot wires was contacting part of the body. I taped it and it fired right up.
