Here's my engine. I've been looking at other pics and there are tubes that go from the fan shroud to what seems to be the exhaust... Mine have been plugged up as you may see here. What do I do with this?

does your bus have heater boxes or J tubes?

Heater box is the giant silver thing on the bottom. They are on both sides. The plugged up spots on your engine should have a tube which carries air through the heater boxes and out the back into the vehicle to heat the car.

Ok, thanks. I guess I don't have heat. Should I keep those plugged or run a hose to the bottom of the car? Would this reduce the heat in the engine compartment?

keep it plugged. more cooling for your cylinders

My 2 cents worth:
If your engine does not have heat exchangers, and instead has "J-tubes"
coverging into the exhasut, then it would be OK to plug the outlets, forcing more air over the cylinders--esp. if you are in a mild/hot climate.
If you have heat exchangers, but they are not sending heat into the cabin
for heating purposes, then do not plug the outlets, as the air still needs to flow thru the heater boxes for engine cooling.

looks like you really need an air filter too, before you suck some small children into your engine

Yeah, I found an oil bath filter in the classifieds. I might just have to snatch it up.

I think I remember reading about this once and the subject was about the differences in fan shrouds, dog house, OG, EMPI, thing, etc. I believe it might have been Jake Raby who had done lots of research on how the Germans made these fan shrouds and what worked and didn't. If I recall, Jake said that when you have the outlets plugged like this you should drill a hole in them to bleed a bit of air off. This would mimic the calibrated leak that Jake said heat exchangers have. The leak was factored into the design for proper airflow by the Germans and without it you don't get laminar airflow through the shroud and wind up with less cooling for the engine.
