Hi Emeritusx, the idea for this thread is just to show and talk about "split buses". What do you think?

And here you have my 1960 westfalia's birth certificate and some questions.
Did you see a 1960 kombi (231) split bus with letherette dark beige front seats?
Is the M023 code the SO-23 code instead of sealed beams hedlights code?

Its cool with me... I just ordered mine about a week ago.
Mcodes http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/mcodest1.php
Also I would think that when the vehicle left the factory it was not know yet that it would be a camper, however I may be wrong. When we build a vehicle we do not know if later an outside vendor will convert it to a camper. |

Since your bus was a "Tourist Delivery", it was likely taken to Westfalia by the owner, which is why you don't have the m-code for the so23 kit. A "factory" (vw factory, that is) so23 would have the camper m-code as well as an SK paint code. I had a '61 that was the same way. |

Maybe I wasn't clear, I have the 23 code on my M plate but on the birth certificate M23 refers to sealed beam hedlights I thought that it should be a mistake.
That's my M-plate

| Yep, they screwed up your birth cert. Maybe they coudn't read the "J23" and transposed it as "023". Also I think your birth cert color should say "Special Color", since your m-code plate has the SK code, not VWs paint code. |

I wish my bus had a m code plate, damn PO took out the divider bulkhead.
Could it be that Westfalia replaces the mcode plate when they add their magic? That 156 code ( Used on tourist delivery and German-delivery Buses ) might mean deliver to Westfalia for pimping..
Did you send a copy of your mcode plate to the museum when you ordered? |

No, I didn't send my plate to the museum, and I don't think that Mplate was replaced at Westfalia Factory. Also if you look at both certificates I posted, you will realize that the SC left the factory only 6 days after it was built, and my westy left it after 51 days!!. I think that Westfalia do their "magic" on those 51 days  |

That would explain why only Westfalias are M-Coded as campers and the OTWs are not. |

Tourist Delivery buses were or ordered through a dealer and picked up in Germany or at a dealer in Europe not dropped off at Westfalia. |

"Tourist Delivery" customers could take delivery of a bus and take it to Westfalia for the camper conversion. My first so23 was a tourist delivery bus that had an so23 kit (including roof hatch) but no m-code for the camper kit. I know of at least a handful of other buses that have similar histories. |

I know of a few too but that was hardly the norm. With all the things done to buses over the years i'd need some documentation to believe it on case by case basis. |
