I think it depends what this "problem" is, was he any more specific? I think in the long run if there are any types of engine problems you want to pull the engine and heads for inspection. If there is a true cylinder problem, then you may want to pull those and the pistons too. The Muir book outlines a procedure to do this and inspect the crankshaft without pulling the case apart. Once you get to any one of these steps, you may find more to tell you which direction to go. |

are you saying not to use a plastic fuel injected fuel filter? I have a brand new VWoA plastic fuel injection filter new in the box. I was going to install this soon, but were there some problems with them that I am not aware of? |

| If I remember correctly the square plastic one is for bays and the metal one is for Vanagons. They might be interchangeable though. |

| after i inspected the case there is evidence on the pistons cylinders and heads that the engine was run hot and metal bits in the oil galleries probably mean it was run with low oil. im gonna get a new oil cooler and im buying a new case, crank, cam, pistons and cylinders off of an old old neighbor who used to overhaul vws all the time. once sold one in spotless condition with new internals for $400. he couldnt believe i spent $2000 on mine. |
