Hey guys so i'm missing my lower engine tins...problem is I have no idea what my current tins are from. Here's some pictures to help solve the mystery...

If anyone has pictures of the engine tins I'd need for the lower section I'd really appreciate it. As always, thanks for your help!

Looks like 75-76 but the top really doesn't matter, we'll need pics of the exhaust and heat exchangers.

I can do that...i'll go grab some pictures now

72-74 heater boxes.. Those bottom tins are hard to find but ya might get lucky. Or if you are creative, you could make some. Here is a link to GermanSupply for the one on the right side:

Shameless but possibly helpful plug here... www.bustedbus.com has the 72-74 deflector plates. We also have them from 411/412, which, when combined with their matching front tins, match up to the bus breast plate and 72-74 bus heater boxes just the same, after one tin screw hole drilled.

Hope that is helpful. -Chris

Does anyone have any pictures of the bottoms tins installed, I am planning on making a pair, what exactly is the purpose of the bottom tin?

Jeff Geisen Thu Feb 18, 2010 1:37 pm

... it's purpose is air channeling as well as push rod tube protection.

Interesting installation of a type 4 engine into a Fastback type 3. In addition to the necessary tinwork you need, I would ponder:

Reliabilty of the engine support created, instead of modifying a type 3 rear hanger to fit the type 4 engine rear mounts. It appears from that one pic that the heater boxes sit on the support bar which is holding the engine up. Thus all of the engine weight relies on the structural integrity of the heater boxes. Now I may be viewing the pic wrong and may be way off on this assumption. Please excuse me if I've made a poor observation.

The type 3 engines didn't require the airtight engine bay, the cooling air being drawn from the outside through the big accordion bellows between the cooling fan shroud and the body. Type 4 engines are different, they draw cooling air from the airtight engine bay. If you haven't modified some type of bellows set-up, you should do that. Your type 4 engine won't be drawing cooling air, but rather hot air off the exhaust and from the hot air exiting beneath the engine. Can't tell from your pics, but it looks like there is no modification in place. A year ago I saw a type 4 engine in a type 3 at one of the BugOuts and I asked the dude why he hadn't addressed this issue. He said it wasn't necessary and that the engine ran cool with no overheating problems. So maybe I'm just being over cautious about keeping the engine cooled properly with your conversion. But, then again, no telling how long that engine lasted in that guy's Squareback.

Thanks Colin. They don't look to difficult to make and since I will be looking for a thermostat I will definitely at least attempt to make a pair, as a imagine that the thermostat would cool down at high speeds without them. Maybe im just imagining things.

Hey Nica, if you end up making lower engine tins could you post your construction steps? I'm missing my 72-74 tin as well, and it would be nice if there was a good guide out there to follow if I can't find any lower tins up for grabs. Thanks if you can!

Just make a pattern using heavy manila paper. No big deal done it several times. The 75-78 are much more of a pain to make.
