Sold Samantha (1969 Transporter) and bought Guinevere (1972 Campmobile). I picked her up for $1000 which included 3 Motors, 2 Transmissions and an oodle of parts.

BEWARE OF RUST...LOTS OF IT

This is my current daily driver and I couldn't be any happier. On with the pics!

Pictures of when looking at it:

When I came to pick her up:

Motors and parts! I had to make 4 Trips to pick up all the parts, way too many too list.

Cleaning the vynil

Done at 11PM, looks much better than what I started with as you can sit in it now without feeling dirty

Took out mat to see the damage up front

Drivers seat is rusted shut, it won't budge what so ever. Any ideas? :(

Started grinding out the rust to bare metal and priming to prevent it from getting worst.

Got excited with the nose and look what I found

TADA! For now at least

Picture on day 2

Motor is from a 1976 Bay Window, has external oil cooler, 009 and weber 2 barrel carb. He says he put stainless valves and a cam but I can't see them so I won't say it does have it. Does leak oil though, lots

Ordered eyelids, a new exhaust which was much needed and super awesome red baron shift knob all from MAMotorworks

Old v. New Exhaust (I like the sound, must quieter)

Attempted to clean the bottom of the tin while installing the exhaust, I think my heater boxes have cracks/broken

Showing off the new exhaust

I then decided to clean that nasty poptop I had:

A Ladybug came and visited :P

And a link to the exhaust:

That is what I have done so far. I am going tomorrow to buy a welder, finish my radio installation and prepare for Winterjam which is this weekend.

It looks spotted! (with rust)

Is the underside scary?

Soviet1942 Tue Feb 16, 2010 7:29 pm

underside is actually pretty nice, atleast compared to my first bus.

Yeah I know, I like it since it sits lower.

Wow!

That's the kind of buses they have in florida? No offense but that steaming dog pile makes my bus look concours ready. You have greater Stones than I, having taken on such a project. Save 'em all! (start ordering metal)

Considering what you started out with I think you've done a great job with the cleanup. Might want to cover the remaining rust holes with something to stop water from getting in. But man, that's a big project. Great work so far. Keep us posted. I've got a 70 bay shell that I can cut metal out of for you if you need any panels. I'm near atlanta though.

I reckon if you drove with the pop top up you could peel the roof off. Maybe a side window frame or two aswell.

I take it there aren't any, er.. vehicle inspections in florida then :?:

The work you have done so far looks good. Long way to go though! But, if it drives and you have the time and resources to fix it as you go its all good!

The new exhaust looks cool, but a bus needs to have the exhaust directed to the corner as the original had. If you push the exhaust straight out the back like your new one does, you will have problems with exhaust entering the cabin.

Do a search on it, you will find many opinions that state the issue more clearly than I have.

I scabbed a set of boneyard front seats a couple years back. Drivers side was rusted solid to the rails. I took a 5' length of 1 1/2" black pipe and slid it behind the drivers seat and the metal backing, low. I had to work each side (from outside the driver door and between front seats) with numerous large hammer blows before I was able to get it to move. Took about an hour (maybe more) and a generous supply of PB (which is a crap shoot cause it is difficult to get the rails with the seats in place). It was an effort, but it did not damage the seats. Everything cleaned up well.

I commend you for saving that one!!
GREAT progress so far! Hopefully, It'll never be as bad as it was...

The flanges on those heater boxes are not '72. They must be the later ones and that might explain the weird fit and why they cracked.

The motor is from a '76 bay.

Soviet1942, you are dedicated! I wish I had that kind of time.

It's hard to find buses in S.Fla. With the Everglades on the west and the Atlantic on the east, the moisture gets blown every which way.

Hey Soviet, I have some good donor metal for you. I just cut up the '70 and have not gotten rid it yet.

Will do as I do need metal, lots of it  My main priority is to get that roof fixed so if you have any good roof clips tell me.

Thanks for the heads up I will try doing that soon. This seat is busted!

Rust aside, Soviet1942, with all those parts and a runner, too... you made a score!

Nice work on the fix-up so far. Hey, the Red Baron shift knob makes it a keeper.

Much as I really like the look of the new exhaust, system, I'll have to agree that it's very important for buses & even station wagons (BTDT), to have the exhaust exit at the corner(s). Having the, ah... er... extra Fe2O3 ventilation system on your Westy makes it even more critical. At least seal up the rear of your camper (windows/hatches/holes) super tight if you decide to keep running that exhaust system... we all want you to continue to hang around and complete the project.

Good work. Best wishes on your restoration.

flat4freak1978 Wed Feb 17, 2010 1:05 pm

I've got a perfect roof for a standard transporter. You could probably cut the westy hole in it. Let me know if you need it. Its been coated and rust proofed.

I heard they used to put asbestos in the heat exchangers. What year did they stop doing this? Careful....

Could that be the white smoke coming out of the cracks in the heat exchangers?
