hello guys..

i just bought a clutch cable for my bus half a year ago, but it doesn´t fit. it isn´t long enough and the front don´t fit to my clutch pedal.

does anyone know, how long that cable exactly has to be, or maybe know someone who has one for sale?

would be great, if someone could help me out here.

ben

The clutch cable are different in the early two or three years from later ones.
I bought the cable for my 1950 Bus at Veteranen Dienst Gerhards here in germany.
You can order also a very good bus T1 parts book from him. You can find very intrested informations in this book. Informations you can´t find in an official vw parts book. He collected beetles and busses since the early 70`years. In the book you can find also the differents about speedo from 1950 (two veigel types) and the later vdo speedo up to 1967 or all types from shock absorbers....Very intrested.

If you don´t find a correct one, use a longer one. Cut them and screw the spezial item on it.... You can find this spezial kit for buggys or kitcars here....

Hi Ben,

Ok so i cant remember exactly which cable i have in the 51 now - my spare i have in the van which i don't remember if i got at the same time is a standard up to 59 LHD cable. part number - 211721335b. These are available from Wolfsburg west or KK in the UK.
I have pictured the end at the clutch.

I cant promise it fits (as my spare i really should check :) )- there is a chance i may be able to check it for you this week but i cant promise.

Incidently from what Axel was saying - my 52 had one of these Vw items fitted on the end of the clutch cable - i found one NOS at Hessisch shown below...
Cheers

Mark

Yes this works also, but only with a broken end of the clutch. You need a piece of the end, not only the cable. If you have only the cable it dosn´t work. I have this item also in stock, for an broken clutch at the end.

Hi Ben, could you post a pic of your cable end that's wrong, (the clutch pedal end) and also see if you can measure the length of the cable you have that's wrong and how much you estimate it to be short by.
I know you have a different gearbox to the early crash box we are using but it shouldn't make much difference i guess.

hello mark,

the cable i got is way to short.. it s 2340.. i guess the send me one for bugs, i don´t know.

i will try to contact the classicpart center (where i got this cable from) to send me a correct one..

but the only have them with this end..

thats for shure!

i found in this where you can see the correct end i´m needing

this is out of a parts catalog from 1953, there are three different lengs

but i now, i´ll need a 3136mm, thanks to buba..

johnny d Mon Feb 22, 2010 2:15 am

this is a shot of the veteranen service catalog

i will try to contact them too.. because i will need all of the other parts too! :(

52panelvan Mon Feb 22, 2010 3:05 am

I will measure the up to 59 (211721335b) one i have when i get home but just so you know it does NOT have the Bowden tube and is a straight through cable. This may not be ideal for a hot gearbox and engine setup but would still work although there may be clutch judder issues.

As there are 2 cables lengths- there is one tiny clutch tube change over the first year but does not give any real routing differences between 50-53, so i would imagine the longer cable is because of the extra distance the the Bowden tube creates when it was used in very late 52 late crash boxes and syncro mesh box ->53 onwards .

Anyway i will measure the straight through upto 59 cable and let you know tonight- im guessing its the shorter one. 8)

Cheers

hello mark..

i ordered one wich should be 3116mm today, and tonny helps me out with an adapter! 8)

so i guess, it should be fine for me.

dennis found out a address where you can order customised clutch cables.
i will figure out if they can build us some with the correct length and front end. btw. is 3136mm the length of the complete clutch cable (with front and rear end) or only the cable?

52panelvan Mon Feb 22, 2010 11:41 am

Hi Ben,

Just to confirm the up to 59 one is the shorter cable (211721335b) i posted above is the- 3116mm. (that part number is current by the way).

If you have ordered the same part number as i have then it is without the bowden tube. i would imagine the bowden tube is the longer one.

Either way i would guess the clutch cable should reach without the adapter but nice to have to be sure.
I run the straight cable on my 51/52 and i have no problem, but then i have 30hp :D

Hi Johnny, that's a Beetle's cable.

and here you have more information from differents years parts manual just to compare.

1955

1958 (yes I know it's in spanish, but I know you will understand  )
a partir=from / hasta=to / (cond. a la der.) = RHD

1967
