Which is why the factory released a bulletin at some point to omit the gasket ring on type 4 engines. previosuly from notes I have seen here and ther, it was common practice for dealers to sell owners on 50K mile valve freshen up/lapping. This allowed new head gaskets to be installed starting the process over.
But...when you let them run too far...as you have seen....its no longer just a head leak. its head destruction. Ray

I wish I would have jumped back on the Samba to catch the silicone advice lightly on both sides of the shims. Next time perhaps as I've just adjusted the valves:)

I ended up using a water hose clamp to compress the rings enough to slide the cylinder over. It helps to have two people as the clamp is not wide enough to cover all three rings at the same time thus making it a two step process.

I really do appreciate all your help here..much thanks!

How crucial is the tin under the oil cooler? Mine did not have one when I took it off but the book says it should be there. 3 inches long with a 90 degree bend with two tabs. Can I get by with out it?

They were not used after a certain production.
They are not that critical. It is to stop air loss under the cooler, when they had the big thick cooler seals.

Just wanted to report that the engine went in last night and fired right up! Did the happy dance and high fived everyone in the garage!!! What a relief to know there were no catastrophes. The rebuilding process was such a neat learning experience. Thanks for everybody's help :D

Good to here you had a success.
Keep an eye on it for oil leaks. If you did everything right it should be good.
Break it in gentle. Do not lug it or over rev it.
