View original topic: New alternator, shredding belts

Just installed one of the Chinese alt. kits, and now I am finding belt shavings and the wonderful order of burnt rubber. I did ensure that the pulleys are lined up, and the there appears to be no issue with the rotation of the alt. I currently have 4 shims in the center and the balance (6) on the outside. I have about 3/8 to 1/2 inch deflection at the midway point on the belt. Ideas? Motor is a 1600 SP

When its running what do you see? I could be all kinds of out of alignment at higher than idle speed. No noises associated with the shredding?

Thought I would edit this and say to have someone work the throttle from inside the car so your hands/arm is not in the way of a shredding belt.

Pictures would be helpful if you have a camera. Thanks.

It has to be either the pulley out of alignment, a bad pulley surface, or improper adjustment/assembly of the pulley components.

Since when does the Chinese know anything about a VW? Or a vehicle for that matter.

Alignment does sound about right though!

They don't and they don't need to. All they do is manufacture what the U.S. distributors and parts houses want them to. It's simple. Just a negotiation between the design and quality specs and the price. Then our buyers say too expensive, gotta cut more corners. No fault of the Chinese but rather the greed for big profit by our people.

Agreed. People out to make a quick buck. There is a lot of poor quality stuff coming here from China. But hey, it's cheaper. :bay_red:

The sheeve halves are together correctly, belt alignment looked good (looking down on them while the motor was out). No apparent binding or slippage. Update to the begining of my original post. I did add another shim to the center of the puley (5 total in the middle). Now I do not see "belt shavings" for lack of a better word, but I do smell burning rubber. I suspected slippage of the belt, but I do not see any evidence. The belt is not hot as one wold expect, no glazein on the vee of the belt. I am perplexed.

is this a brand new belt? is it an old dry rotted belt? is it a new CHINESE belt?
