The heater control box on my 73 Westy vents through the part that looks like a mushroom on it when the flaps are in the closed position. I have seen this on other VW heat control boxes. What is the purpose of this. Is it to cool the heat exchanger when not in use or what? What happens if you were to operate the heat exchanger plugged off without this air flowing through it.

You are correct, it's the heat dump when it's not going to the cab. Blocking it will overheat the heat exchangers and cause them to crack or burn out, they need the airflow to cool them.

Thank you for the info. I guess everything on a VW has a purpose. It is just knowing what it is.

Pretty well the only part on a VW that isn't there to make the vehicle work well is the emblem on the front, don't think you can easily outsmart an office tower full of German engineers.
