Alright i know there are many threads on this, but i haven't been able to find one that can answer my question...if there is one hidden in the forums somewhere please direct me!

Alright well i have this shuttlecock bushing that is advertised as being meant for the front...

It doesn't appear that i have a front bushing left to reference, nor does it seem like the shuttlecock bushing will fit. And just to make this clear , im talking about the shift rod bushing that is in the very front, by the shifter...

My question is: where exactly does this shuttlecock bushing go? does anyone have a picture that i can use as a reference because after searching the forums i'm a tad bit more confused...I have seen the breakdown diagram from the Bentley that shows the bushing in the front, yet without seeing it installed im a bit confused!

thanks for your help!

That bushing goes on the front of the rear shift rod, just inside the front end of the tube going to the rear of the bus. Disconnect the front and rear shift rods from each other and also the rear coupling in front of the trans. Slide the rear shift rod forward and you will see the old bushing emerge from the front of the tube. At least with the new bushings they arn't real easy to get nicely on the shaft. Pliers or vice grips will probably be needed to get the little knob in the shaft hole.
If you ever have the engine out also pull the trans so you can get the rear bushing replaced. With the shift rod out you can nicely swab and clean the crud out so the new bushings will have the best surface to run against. Lube them well.

Parts listing on these bushings are usually all messed up and misleading. There is a front shift rod bushing but yours is the front bushing on the rear shift rod.

That goes in the middle. This is the front bushing that goes in the very front of the shift rod is smaller.

that is the front one, the rear one has thiner walls on the "teeth" wich makes it more flexible and lacks the metal ring.

Sorry, I forgot about the wisest and most helpful information. You can ask on the Samba about these things but it's much easier (and frequently a lot more accurate) to check the pictures and the instructions in the service manual. If nothing else it makes the bus a lot happier. No manual? Leave the wrenches in the tool box.

Hey Caleb, how you been doin'? Cold wet winter up there?

I think you are looking for this one (under the shifter):

Actually it has been really warm and dry. Havoc on the Olympics but I have been getting tons done on the bus! How about down there?

Here is an exploded view of the shift rod and bushings:

We must have switched weather conditions with you. Seems like we traded the normal dryness for all of this unusual amount of rain. At least it's not record snow like our Flagstaff buds. Need to put in a couple new transaxles but instead just repainted (primer again) the bus and put on a new steering wheel cover. Mixed up priorities again.
Olympic coverage sure shows that it is a beautiful place up around there.

So it looks like his is item 28 with the metal ring.

Thanks guys! that points me in the right direction and looks like it will fit better than the shuttlecock bushing.
