My 54 kombi is nearing the end of its resto and im on the hunt for cab door glass. i have one piece of fixed glass but cannot find the slider glass for love nor money!

Can I use later glass with barndoor catches?

Does anybody have some that they want to sell I dont care if its real or repro. - Im in the UK.

Not 100% sure if the glass is the same size, but a later bus glass has 2 holes and a barndoor has one. If the glass is the same size then you could use later glass with later catches until you find the right glass

I'm going a bit from memory here but I believe the KCW Barndoor Deluxe has later slider glass with Barndoor latches so it should work.

The glass is the same size as far as I know as my '54 Truck had later glass when I bought it but I tracked down the original glass (it was pilfered by a previous owner) and installed it.

Why not have glass cut and the single hole drilled?

Here you have some pics of both glasses to compare.
BD glass is bigger, but is almost the same in high and less than half inch longer.
BD glass is from a 1952 BD with earlier vent wings.

Best regards
Marcos

hard to tell, but looks like late glass with barndoor catches?
so loooks like thats an option - with a little hole for the rain to get in.

While we are on sliding windows...
what colour on a deluxe should the felt be for the sliding glass to slide in? ive seen mainly black but also beige, or is that only repo?

.."with a little hole for the rain to get in. "..there's a grommet for every hole

as awsome as grommets are, it would look sh*t having one in the middle of your window.

here is a picture of the hornbecker 52, which i believe is all OG, with the light coloured felt.

The light colored felt is neat. I'd be curious to know if that was carried forward.

My low mileage '54 Truck was black when I got it and I'm pretty sure the felts were original but now I cannot remember if it was black felt or just all the felt was missing leaving the black rubber underneath.

Hey Simpjam........ google replacement classic car glass and there are a few people in the UK who will cut you a piece from a paper template. Some guys in Gloucester will do them for about 50 quid each. I'm hoping to use later ones for now in my '54 as they would seem to fit ok with later sliders.
Nice height bus by the way :D

Surely that is just faded material? Didn't og slider rubbers have material on them as opposed to repros having the fuzzy stuff stuck to rubber?

barndoormambo Wed Mar 03, 2010 6:25 am

..the rubbers in my 51 DEFINATELY had material ( like a fine hessian) over rubber; but there's no telling how original they were.. :?
