Congrats Jimi!
If it's your first and you really want to learn about how these are built, repaired, etc:
1). You found the right sight with the Samba! Spend a few (many) hours just going back through the questions posted over the past several months...you'll learn a ton from others.
2). As indicated above, purchase the Muir book.
3). Purchase the Bentley manual correct for your year.

Between these three references (Samba, Muir, Bentley), there's not much you can't tackle!

And, yes, we all are addicted to pics of other's VW's, so start shooting and start posting!

All right, you are jumping right into it! If you are painting the car, make sure you strip everything off you don't want painted. Bumpers and bumper brackets, running boards, all the chrome trim, door and hood handles. Remove the headlights and front turn signals and remove the rear turn signal lenses and loosen up the housings and remove the rubber seals. Loosen up the fenders and remove the fender beading between the fenders and the body. If you can afford the new rubber around the windows, trim the rubber back away from the body so when you replace the rubber, the paint goes underneath. Take the windshield wipers off and remove the bolts around the windshield wiper shafts. Loosen up the rear license plate housing and remove the rubber trim, and finally remove any badges on the rear deck. This will help you paint job look the best it can be. If the painter tries to just to mask everything off, I guarantee that he'll miss spots and get overspray on some trim or rubber. Quality is all in the details and in an afternoon even a novice can make a paint job come out so much better.

Post some pictures after it's all done. Good luck!
