I picked up Aircooled Freak's pigalle square down in AZ. Towed it home last weekend and been trying to take it in.
The dash is toast, but not going to touch it until I can do it justice. Seats were recovered by a previous owner, and the bases are now black. Located some red seats and going to pick them up this weekend. Carpet is currently black, but will be replaced with correct stuff in time.
The body has some rust/ rot in the driver side heater channel. Its been repainted at some time in its life, not the greatest job. But looks cool for a driver. Other than that body is fairly straight, no major accidents/ damage.
Fronts been lowered a notch or two. Rear is stock height. Trans shifts through gears. Engine is hard to start, but idles. Very difficult to accelerate. Carbs are weber ict's.
So today I decided to check out the engine. Has some serious mileage on it! Carbs.... passenger carb accelerator pump wasnt pumping, driver was. Pulled the air filters off, and the driver carb intake was really loose. The passenger carb top was loose, so possibly the issues with the driveability.
Plans are to make a nice driver for my wife. Its her graduation present, since we sold her fastback a few years ago. Ill post up some pictures when I get the chance.
Engine is from Dec 66 car was built Nov 10 65. thanks to the birth certificate provided with the car by Mike. Thanks again Mike for the opportunity to own a pigalle!

jack how you been. Its been quite a while hasn't it. Angela and I used to love the type 3 gatherings in SD. Do you guys still get together much? The fast we had back then is floating around Oceanside somewhere. Seen it listed on samba a few times, man its in bad shape. This pigalle is really neat. Photos will be getting posted up. Im the same way, I want to see pictures, not just the words on the page. Ill get them uploaded this evening.
As for the pigalle question. These cars were produced from August of 65 through mid 66. Someone will correct me if Im wrong. There are pigalles and teaks, and allegedly an azure. Pigalles are red interiors and came on Fasts, Squares, Type 1 and 3 ghias. Again someone correct me if Im wrong. The dash, steering column, steering wheel, seats (including the base), carpet, door panels, and the pinchwelt in the door opening are all red. The exteriors were either white or black, black being the more rare. Teaks are brown and azures blue. Once again if Im incorrect someone will right my wrong. There is a post on samba with photos called "show your pigalles, and teaks" that would be informative.

Last night I went through the carbs. All seems well, passages are clean and clear as well as the jets. Cleaned all the dirt and grime from the intakes and externals. Reassembled and bolted them back on.
When I went to start it, it turned over a couple seconds. I stopped giving the starter a rest, carbs needed to fill with fuel again. Went to start it a second time and no starting. For some reason I dont think the battery is dead, but I didnt have my multimeter handy and family just arrived so I pulled off. Possibly a loose ground or bad connection to the starter. It will be figured out in time.
Hopefully I get a chance to work on it this weekend. |

Jason thats me.. and thanks again after like 9 years for helping me install that front windshield in 66 fasty. haha
So todays adventure consisted of driving to and from Hollywood CA! Boy thats alot of fun. Not. What happened to the sunny So Ca I used to live in, that had to be the worst rain storm I've ever driven in today. Anyway I picked up a pair of pristine pigalle seat bases. The knobs are in great condition as is the chrome piece on the back rest. Ill post up pics tomorrow and hopefully I get a the engine running tomorrow too. Does anyone know the paint code for the pigalle red. The bases need to be repainted, the PO of them started to refinish one. Also where can I get correct seat material from? Everything I find is complete basketweave, not the smooth with basket weave inserts. Also what would be correct for the rear seat? Any pics of an original rear seat around.
More tomorrow. |

Will do Jason. I've always been around, but as you can see I dont post much. I will probably double my posts in this one thread.
T3KG thank you very much. Now another question, can any paint shop mix this up for me? I mean do they all know how to properly mix that paint? |

| as for the seats, you might be able to check with lenny at west coast classics. they can do pretty much any original style of seating. for example, your smooth w/basket-weave inserts. |

That all depends on what reference material they have access to. I can't find the formula for L652 in any of the online databases I know of. Since it was apparently never used as an exterior paint color it might be hard to track down the info. Color matching a non-faded paint area like the underside of the steering column might be your best bet. |

Well the pig moved under its own power again today. Got the carbs synched and all tightened up. Runs ok, but has some miles on her. Let Angela take it for the inaugural round the block spin.
Then it was my turn. I think timing may be off, but it dies out about 2500-3000 rpm. like a governor kicked on. I'm also not positive that the gen is fully charging so maybe the batt couldnt keep up? Either way I turned around and headed back to the garage. The trans shifts ok, but possibly a busted clutch tube, or just a really spongy clutch. Feels and sounds like the motor and trans mounts are all shot too.
Next on the list is getting it registered for this Fridays get together at the Local VW dealer.
Mild core... I did get into contact with Bert who knows of an NOS pigalle dash, to bad it would cost almost as much as the car. 1500 Euro's! Thats like $2300. Needless to say there is still an NOS pigalle dash for the baller out there.
T3KG I didnt find any info on the L652 Scarlet red, but was planning the same thing. Find a nice spot of original red and get it color matched. When I do that if the paint shop allows Ill post the mixture up.
On a positive note the car stops great and the recovered seats are really comfy.
All that counts is She's Happy!

| Congrats on the purchase! Glad to see another pigalle on the road :D I mix paint at the Napa auto parts where I work. I just checked the martin senour online formula look-up & could not find a formula for L652 scarlet red. I searched interior & exterior colors still no formula. I think a paint store that mixes glasurit (maybe not the correct spelling) paint should be able to look the code up. |

thanks for the heads up rusty. Wonder if Vegas has any of those. I'd hate to see it be the complete wrong color.
Jason thats the plan. Only problem I cant seem to find a 66 dash. Bunch of RHD stuff in the classifieds, Bert3 early repops, and late models. Burt gave me the heads up that 66 is a one year only, which sucks because now that I know this I have to find a 66 dash. What Ill probably end up doing is ordering one of ISP's repop dash's and test my vinyl dying skills with it. Rather do it to a $125 dash than something more $$.
Hopefully the buyer for my bug comes up today. If so more $ to put into the square. |
