so today I went out and checked over the carbs again. I decided I probably had a jetting issue and checked both sets of carbs. I dont remember if I had checked both when I got the car or just one, so no better time than the present. I pull the pass side carb off and everthing looks good. Float is set to specs, needle seat opens and closes as needed, jets are all clear, float bowl is clean.

I pull the second carb out and same procedure, everything looks good again. But wait whats that under the air correction jet. Oh yeah you need an emulsion tube in both carbs! Holy crap, one carb has an emulsion tube the other doesnt. Well got some on the way and hopefully I can get it running after they come in.

The "stock" F78 was the existing one, which seems to be unobtainable. So I ordered two of the F5's along with a couple of idle and main jets, just in case. Man what a pain, but no ones fault but my own. I should have checked them over better when I first tore into them. Now the wife is wanting to take it to the monthly meetup this friday, I just hope the parts are in by then.

So after nothing but problems with the ict carbs, I decided to go an entirely different route. The pigalle is now fuel injected with a megasquirt brain, relay panel, cdi ignition box, and a JAW wide band controller.

I started collecting parts for this quite a while ago, for my bus actually, but decided that the square was a prime candidate. I started with a stock setup for the hardware side. I am using standard GM sensors, instead of the stock VW sensors, easier to do with the megasquirt (MS). Stock injectors, runners, plenum are all being used. I bought the majority of the electronics from DIY I built up a MS1 chip with a V3 board.

Yesterday I finished up all of the wiring and installation of parts. So i started it up for the first time. After messing with an ignition gremlin it started right up. Now I just need to start tuning it, but it already runs better than the carbs ever did.

FYI I did not put any new holes in the car. Sometime in the past someone cut a couple of holes into the driver side fender from the engine bay and a huge hole behind the rear driver side panel into the fender area. So I used those for the wiring into the engine bay from the cargo area. I currently have a temp shelf built for the electronics to set on that will get carpeted and covered at some point down the road. Now the only thing holding me up is a battery for the laptop. No on road tuning yet.
Stay tuned for updates.

What??? Nobody throws out carbs and installs fuel injection... It's always the other way around!

Good for you!

I know right! I'm sure many people are shaking their heads in disbelief. I love it. I'm really anxious to go out and test drive it, especially since I skipped needing a laptop battery. I just put in a voltage inverter. I'll try to keep updating my progress here.

Giggity giggity goo...all right! Friggin awesome dude :D

Get the registered version of tuner studio, everytime you go for a drive with auto tune it will keep getting better and better.

After reading all of your guys comments on the registered version of TS, I did just that.

I am glad I listened to them, its amazing how it keeps dialing it in better. I'm glad you got it up and running with no drama...actually i'm a bit jealous

post some pics of your trigger wheel, i'm curious how you got that to work.

I never did a trigger wheel. Im only controller fuel right now. I just cant think of a good way to go distributorless in a type 3 application. I think I would have to use the flywheel and machine it as a 36-1. I dont see that happening though.

I think I know a guy that can help you with that Eric. :D

Yeah Chris I'm sure something could be done. If it ever is, you know who will get a flywheel from me. hahaha

So I cant really take it on much of a drive, because I'm awaiting my oilbath air filter, but I did manage to take it on a quick little spin around the block. It runs really smooth. There is not much seat time in it, but I hope that changes this weekend. The idle is smooth and even, along with acceleration. Can't wait for some serious drive time. I just have to remind myself that its my wife's car and not mine.

Don't worry I don't think she will let you forget whose car it is.

I doubt she has any memory loss regarding that situation. I'm just lucky enough to still claim the "tuning" stage, so drive time is mine for a very limited time.

Hey Chris did you ever get those carbs bushed? guess I could put them back together and sell them.

Almost done with the Weber door stops. should be this weekend.

Cool thanks Chris. I may stop by in the EFI square if the oil bath show up.
