This is my 54 single, im sure some of you have seen it in the gallery already. I found it this past fall while looking at a 67 westy on craigslist. After talking to the owner over the phone a few times he told me about a 54 truck that he had. Never thought I would own anything this old as most everything around here (Chicago) has long since either rusted away or been crushed. I hope to have it driving the streets fairly soon..if anybody has any old 16 inch wheels laying around they arent' using I would be willing to take them off your hands :P

as its now sitting..i need to do the brakes and put a motor in when it gets warmer out.

out from its hiding spot for the past 20 years or so..

Nice! Veddy veddy nice. Looks pretty solid for the midwest! Believe me I know, I'm in Iowa.

Amazing, seems like I see more BD Singlecabs than anything else these days.

thanks for the good words. she has some issues no doubt but has never been messed with. most everybody i know around here just thinks its a rusty piece of **** and can't understand why I would waste my time doing anything with it.

So it seems to be better to waste your time on that cool truck than on your ignorant friends... ...nice SC, deserves some TLC. Good luck with resto!

heres a bit more on the history of this truck. it was found by the guy i got it from back in the 80's. he was a truck driver and was always keeping an eye out for vws. he found this one in a small town outside chicago, i think alton. i know at one time it served as a honey farm truck in waterman. when the po found the truck it was owned by an old timer vw mechanic who just let it sit outside a barn. i have a keychain from the old dudes shop. the po would stop by all the time to talk to him and see if he was ready to sell the truck. it took him a few years but finally was able to buy it off the old dude for 750.00 dollars. i guess that was alot for the truck at the time.
hopefully i can start making some progress here soon just need to get more money together.

That looks nice compared the the "as found" photo on the trailer.

Cool to locate some history on it.

Looks like it could use a good media blasting. Whatever you do don't have it acid dipped, knowing singlecabs with that much rust it would probably come out in more pieces than when it goes in. Nice score.

i love barndoor single cabs, they are probably my favourite vw! Depends on how much of that original paint can be saved, you wouldnt want to media blast the dove blue if there is still a decent amount of it there!

ya i didn't take the time to strip the multiple layers of paint off just to have it dipped. :?
hope to make some good progres in the next couple months..

Hey Al,
What parts are you looking for so I can keep my eye out for you?

Neil

Neil the big thing im lookin for is 16's but I figure that will probably take awhile. heres what i can think of off the top of my head.
-dove blue brakelight decklid wolfsburg preferably but not a big deal.
-dove blue rear tailgate
-ignition swith with the little plastic piece that hold it in..there is one in the classifieds i've been eyeing
thats about all i can think of at the moment. unfortunately scrappers stole the apron, decklid , and tailgate that were all original to this bus like 10 min. before we got there to look at it.. :x :x :x
