What's up everyone....I need some direction. My friends and I are wanting to build a Class 5 Baja Bug Unlimited. We can get all the parts required forthe build, but we are having a hard time finding the chassis. Anyone know where I can get plans for or have built an A-arm full tube chassis. Any help would be great. Thanks

If you plan on racing 5 unlimited then I would suggest doing a bit more research, a arms and not class legal. Crumco is building some nice 5 unlimited chassis'. Check them out.

oops forgot to mention the arms

Us Tech Inspectors DO notice rule violations like A-Arms in a Class 5...LOL
Below is a link to a class 5 build thread. The chassis builder is a shop called Griffith Welding in SoCal. The car was built for a customer in San Antonio TX who is thrilled with it. You'll see this car is beautiful and will work as well as anything anyone is building for the class these days. Better than most. I'd say that you're not likely to find a better 5-Open chassis anywhere. In the thread, "5racer" is the frame builder Steve Griffith.

Which organization are you planning to race with?

Funny, I saw an 8 truck race for years with a notched frame and nobody said anything...........

That's not nearly as blatant and if his competitors didn't protest, or if he didn't do well enough to bother with...Oh Well!

Besides...This is about offroad VWs, not trucks. You could PM me about which organization and when it was racing. But then, Bill Savage changed the rules of Class 5-Open to allow Rich Minga's Porsche 911 with a beam front end..just one of the reasons I don't work Tech for SCORE since my father retired as Tech Chief and left it for Savage to mangle.

You might wanna look at your budget on this as a class 5 car typically would take at least 40k to build I would think.

Thanks for all the info. I am waiting for the rule book from SCORE with all the specs for each class. I was unaware of the a-arm restriction in the Unlimited class so thanks. We are just in the planning phase right now, so we are just trying to get as much info as we can. Anyother info r advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

if u plan on making it SCORE legal ur talking alot of $$

A new 5 car cost 65-80 thousand a new 5-1600-cost 40 . cheaper to buy used than update later.

This is a great looking car. I'll get to see it up close in the first race of the season here in TX on March 26/27. I can only hope to keep sight of his dust since we are in the same class.

Yep...X10 on Mr. Griffith...GREAT guy to work with and a fellow Class 5 racer! It took us just over a year to finish the build once we got the car from Steve.

Oh BTW...as stated by others...plan to double that 40K budget mentioned earlier

Happy to answer any other questions. 8)

bdkw1 Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:08 am

For 40K I know where you can buy a fully preped championship winning car..........

Cdaniel Mon Mar 01, 2010 11:13 am

I'm not to concerned about the budget. I'm pretty fortunate in that aspect. (don't want to get to crazy with it though) Like I said earlier I can get ahold of pretty much every part needed. The only thing I really need is the chassis.
Right now I'm mainly doing the research to get well informed on all the rules and regulations for running a Class 5 Unlimited car. I won't be able to start the build for some time (due to my job, LOTS of travel) but if I can start gathering the info and parts now by the time I get back from my next deployment I should be ready to go. Again to everyone that has posted I really appreciate all the info. Thanks again!!!

One option is go to a builder that does 5 cars and have them build you a chassis. That will help unsure you are within the rules.

Ricky Crum of Crumco, has the best deal going for a 5 car. 8)

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Any suggestions. I got one (Griffith Welding) I was going to look them up but any others would be great.
