Hi All,
I was just curious about this. I ran across a paragraph the other day while i was looking up another historical question. The info i ran across was posted on wikipedia at the following link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Beetle
It makes mention of a type 1 diesel prototype. Does anyone have any further info on this? Just sounded cool to me an aircooled diesel engine.
Here is what they said
"Diesel
In 1951, Volkswagen prototyped a 1.3 L diesel engine. Volkswagen made only 2 air-cooled boxer diesel engines that were not turbocharged, and installed one engine in a Type 1 and another in a Type 2. The diesel Beetle was time tested on the Nürburgring and achieved 0–100 km/h (0-60 mph) in 60 seconds.[15]

| that sounds fun, the mpg would be good, but 0-60 in 60 seconds couldnt possibly be considered safe on the road these days! Fitting a subaru version might pick the speed up a bit though (although it would be sacrelidgous). |
