Just dropped a 1700 into a 72 bay and haven't changed anything since pulling out the old engine. I have spark from the coil to the distributor spark from the distributor to all plug wires, new points gapped correctly. I've primed the carb throat with a bit of gas, also primed it with starting fluid. When cranking it over it doesn't even give a hint that it wants to start and run. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

It has to be spark, fuel, or compression. Just a matter of finding which one. Keep digging until you find it.

Well pull a plug and ground it on the block and turn the engine over to see if spark is making it to the plugs. If there is any spark it should at least backfire. Check the plugs to see if they are wet. If so leave them out over night to dry out the cylinders. I have used WD40 instead of starter fluid. It is a little bit easier on the engine and will help de flood the engine if it is flooded.

thanks for your input, I've got a compression reading of 120 on 1-2-&3 and 110 on the #4 cylinder. I'll pull a plug and ground it to the block to see what happens

One thing that helped me when I had this trouble was to have someone crank the engine while I slowly turned the distributor around. Eventually I got the engine to run and I then could time it properly with a gun. Of course make sure you have fuel sorted out and spark at the plugs.
I know you said nothing changed but maybe the distributor got moved around? |

If you didn't check for correct placement of the distributor drive you likely have the wires on wrong. If the drive is installed incorrectly in one or both engines you can't just plop the distributor back in the way it was in the old engine.

how much fuel did you use and what is the temperature there where you are working?

primed it with a few teaspoons on several occasions and primed it with starter fluid 2-3 seconds, each time it just cranked over without any indication of starting. This engine was complete with distributor already installed. I will try cranking it over while moving the distributor to see if it will fire.

Like 75 Kombi says that it should at least backfire and pop if there is spark and a bit of fuel regardless of the timing. Unless it is flooded. Dry it out, prime with just a couple teaspoons of gas and try again. Don't use starting fluid.
