Oldvolks are having their March Campout in Samual P Taylor Park in Marin County Ca. All buses and -other weird aircooled vehicles- are invited to come out and join the bonfire, solitude, comradary and fun of camping in West Marin's Redwood groves. We'll be camping in camps 27 through 40 or so, in the back left of the camp sites. Two vehicles per camp spot are authorized, up to 8 people per vehicle. At $35 a night per campsite, split between two vehicles, $18 per night is not bad. Each additional person beyond the driver is $5 more.
We'll be in the back upper left camps, numbers 27 through 40 or so. Bring firewood! We'll see you there... and tell ALL your split bus friends! Let's go camp!

If you want to find about about the park...

I've heard that so far we have about 15-20 buses going, and a squareback.
Remember that it is a State Park, and all of their rules apply.
We can't wait, should be a great turnout. :D |

Yes.
You say when, and we'll meet at the ARCO gas station at the intersection of highway 1 and Almonte Blvd in Mill Valley. If you're coming from San Francisco, exit the "Hwy 1 Stinson Beach" exit, about a half mile past the bottom of the Sausalito Hill. Drive about a mile on Shoreline and the ARCO gas station is on your left.
Same exit if you're coming southbound from San Rafael, "Hwy 1 Stinson Beach" Exit and head west on Shoreline, and look for the ARCO gas station on the left.
251 Shorline Blvd, Mill Valley for the GPS enabled.
http://maps.google.com/maps/place?hl=en&um=1&a...0675208417
Plan on about a two hour trip from there to Camp Taylor Nelson... who we KNOW is going to be in attendance, since we picked the site specifically for him . Plan on about a 2 hour trip from the gas station, but can be as little as an hour with no stops should someone want to forge on ahead without the group. I'm factoring in at least a two stops, and with at least ten buses and weird cockroach looking vehicles, we know the stops eat up time. Not telling you the route, but don't cheat and look either and it'll be that much more fun. The odds that few of the drivers -if any- have taken these routes... well, Lance Armstrong knows em' all since he was a Category 1 bicycle racer and trained all over the bay area. The area we'll be in is patrolled by park rangers with machine guns and baseball bats, so we won't be doing and dirt roads.
I was thinking of leaving at noon, is this alright? This means people would need to arrive, get their gas from this or other local stations and be ready to leave at noon. Full tanks advised. This will be the only gas stop prior to camping, approximately 50 miles away. There is gas in Fairfax and Point Reyes, but don't be the one to delay the trip into camp because you didn't fill up. Just carry spare gas. Does anyone NOT carry spare gas?
I'm looking forward to crashing Fairfax with the mob and NOT having to worry about driving, except we need someone willing to haul a bus load of people to town and back and able to be the Sober Designated Driver. There's a movie theater, dozens of quaint dinning joints, and half a dozen very cool bars and taverns, half of which have live music.
Fairfax is a very small, millionaires-in-tee-shirts and-flip-flops kind of town. Lots and lots of bicycles -a destination for them. The town has a strange sort of sudo-hippie-yuppie feel to it. Coffee shops everywhere, trinket stores, a huge hardware store, a Bank Of America, 147 bike shops, a small auto parts store and then some. For those not in the know, the term "Mountain Bike" was born here by the early 70s Mt. Tam bombers Gary Fisher, Mert Lawel and others. If you're are a rider, you already know... the trails around 'Tam and out of Fairfax can keep a mountain biker busy for months. Ditto for the spandex set. If you had any inclination to rail off 100 miles, these roads are an addicting setting for doing just that. You can research that if you're so inclined.
For anyone wanting to go hiking, fishing or both, there are lakes outside Fairfax you can drive to with bass and trout in them, and near our camp, there is an incredibly large watershed that I believe has fishing, but would require a decent hike should one be up to that; trails exit Camp Taylor in every direction. Take a look at a map and you'll see.
More coming. |
