Hi all,
just a quite question about pulling the choke cable so I can pull the body off the 56 vert.
disconnected at the engine, and the pull knob is out of the dash,
there are 2 grommets going past the gas tank but there is not way the ends of the cable can go through the grommets,
so i am wondering if the cable housing needs to be pulled out of the tunnel?
any suggestions?

| Just pull it out. Good idea to fill up the metal tube with "brake fee" or PB blaster, plug the end so it doesn't leak out during your resto. |

Just be careful as sometimes they are very stubborn...
I managed to get mine pulled all the way to the end when it "let go" and whipped out into my finger sending me to get eleven stitches in my index finger!!!!  :x
It pretty much took the end of my finger off, cut to the bone in a spot!!!
Soak it with some marvel or other lubricant, and just take your time.....Those damn cables can be hazardous sometimes!!! :x
Just something to watch out for.... |

so you are saying to pull the whole housing out or pulling the cable out of the housing?
Because the housing still has to be disconnected from the tunnel below the gas tank.
this is where I am also stuck,
the housing has a nut that connected it to the inside of the car, behind the dash but it doesnt look like there is the same set up heading into the tunnel, is it just pushing in like a bike cable housing?
james, up pretty early or late eh?

Yes peter....Very late!!!! I'm working on my vert and the time flies when you got a starbucks or two...
On the pan where the cable goes in the metal tube is where I was pulling from with a vice grips
I could only get it to come out a little at a time and this was working with using the vice grips to pull an inch at a time....when it freed up is when I slipped and the end of the cable had a sharp edge on it and.....
Just leave the metal tube in the tunnel...The cable is almost like a speedo cable...It's got a rubber or plastic coating over the outside of it that really can be a pain to get out of the tube....
Yes it just pushes in, but it's usually stuck fairly well...
I destroyed my old one on the way out, and just got a new one from Kimball (ovals only)
After I got stitched up!!!! :x
The new cable works smooth as silk now....And my finger still gets the "tingles" every time I think about that cable.... |

the cable came out of the housing way easy, but there was no way the housing was coming out of the tunnel, soaked it for 24 hrs and twisted but when I pulled the housing stretched, so I cut it
hope they are not hard to find.
the body comes off next so its going to be along time till I need the choke

Wow, I am confused as to why the cable had to come out. But now that you have trashed the cable sleeve you may be in for one hell of a ride.
Replacement of the choke cable assembly is a genuine nightmare. I hope it all works out well in the future. For the next time. Remove the choke knob and the cable can remain in place on the pan.
good luck

So now how are you planning to get the rest of the housing out now that you cut it?? Even if you do find a replacement you cannot put it in until the old one is out. |
